At the range yesterday, I loaded 6 "Monarch" 357 magnums, (Academy's new 'house' brand) in the cylinder of my just traded for Mod 13-2. Fired 4 rounds, each one using single action, never got to the 5th round, the gun locked up, cyl. would not rotate, trigger would not go back and hammer would not go back. After about 15 minutes, I was finally able to unload the gun and it functioned normaly. I never tried shooting it again...thinking it must be the ammo..? The gun is in excellent shape, very tight, belonged to a good friend. Any ideas?

The lockup malfunction you described is most commonly caused by primer extrusion into the firing pin hole. Look at the fired primers and see if there are fresh smear marks on the primer where it was forced across the firing pin hole. This can be caused by high pressure loads or a deformed FP hole.

If I remember correctly, "Monarch" is a brand of commercially reloaded ammuniton. That would make it the most likely suspect.

Thanks guys...I had used some Monarch ammo in a one of the 9 MM that I have and it worked fine...I did look at the fired casings from the 357 and they didn't look abnormal...however, I didn't look that closely out at the range and left the casings there...I will try it again tomorrow and see what happens with some other ammo.

Several years ago, I experienced the same thing you did with a 13-2 4".

In my case, a piece of copper jacket material wedged above the forcing cone, and was dragging against the cylinder face. Trigger pull went from 5.5 to 20lbs +. Regards 18DAI.

I have had the same experience with my Model 13 4-inch using "hot" loads. We made a few "Rhino" loads some years ago (about 1350 fps)that shot well in a Ruger SA, but bound up my M13 no end. It doesn't take a huge pressure difference to do that, btw!

I'd check the ammo first.

Thanks again for the good info..I,ve had other S & W 357s, and never had this problem, this is the first Mod 13 I have had.

Will check it with different ammo.

Thanks,
Edd

I've had the same problem with a 66 - no dash....I have been advised it has to do with the gas ring....apparently, the ring was relocated in later models and it solved the problem...I do not know if the same problem is attributable to the Model 13....
