Mod 19-4

Just picked up a 19-4 four inch pinned barrel, has adjustable rear sights with a open square white outline, target trigger and hammer, and a red insert in front sight. It has the factory target grips that are not marked on the inside.

I am not familiar with the mod 19.

Did S&W make a specific target revolver or was this normal production?

The white open square on the rear sight is more yellow that white. With my old eyes, a bright white outline would be helpful. Any way to get this back to the white condition?

I have an older Jinks book that does not show this revolver's serial number range. Any idea when a 63K8xxx was made?

Looking forward to some range time with my new "friend".

I would appreciate any help on the question above.

1980 for that one.

Guns of that vintage typically did not have numbered grips.

This is normal production item.

I know you can change the rear blade on the sights to a new fresh one, but then you have to get the blade height right and there may be a nice way to freshen it up. Hopefully somebody can help you out on that one.

The S/N looks like sometime in 1980.
SCSW 3rd edition says 1980 - 57K0001 - 91K6800.

The 19-4 was the last of the pinned & recessed 19's. They did away with P&R on the 19-5.

It sounds like the RR (red ramp) sight & WO (white outline) rear sight was a standard production gun.

It sounds like the WO may be yellowed from age and/or cleaning solvents? I don't know what can be done to whiten it up.
Maybe some white model paint or nail polish and a fine brush will do the trick.

Probably shipped in 1980 by serial,
Your target grips would not be serial numbered,
target hammer trigger RR/WO sites are correct and common,

Your 19-4 "Combat Magnum" is fairly late production and the last of the P&R versions, the model was introduced in 1955.

Before it was called the Model 19 it was called the Combat Magnum. When I entered law enforcement in 1974 the 4" Model 19 was the favored sidearm of our deputies and cops all over. It is an excellent pistol made by an excellent firearms manufacturer and literally thousands upon thousands of law enforcement officers bet their lives on it every day, coast to coast. It was also a favored sidearm for private purchase for our military, especially during the Koran War/Vietnam years.
