Just joined and have enjoyed touring the site. I know with all the knowledge I have seen on the forum I have come to the right place for help. I have just come across an US Army model 1917 Serial No 154458 all matching and would like to know some history on it. Date of Manufacture etc. It looks 80% and I am well satisfied with action, very tight. Any info would help, Thanks

Welcome! About 170,000 of these were produced as substitute sidearms during 1917-1919. They were in .45 ACP and need clips for these to extract, or .45 Auto Rim. As a later SN yours probably shipped in the later end of the production range, but someone here can probably give you the exact month. Enjoy!

The letter will give you a little more general history and the exact date it shipped. If you want to find out to where your 1917 went, it will state it went to Springfield Armory. Don't ask me how I know :).

Your S&W M1917 was shipped to the Government during the week of January 11, 1919 as part of a weekly shipment of 3450 revolvers, according to my calculations. If you do get a factory letter, I would be interested in how my estimate compares to the "official" one.
