I have a Mod. 1950 .45ACP with 5.5" barrel. The gun has been re blued and the bore is a little rough. I am thinking about the possibility of re barreling to a 3-3.5" and installing better sights. has anyone done something like this?
What shop could do this?
Thanks.

Target or military (fixed sight) model? Anything can be done and often not that expensive. The biggest problem will be finding a 3" - 3.5" barrel in that caliber. And it wouldn't be cheap, figure in the $150 range. Advertise in this forum's classified.

But how rough is the barrel? How does it shoot?

Has the 5" barrel been cut to that length? That's kind of an unusual length for a 1950 Model Target, not so the Military Model. If it's been cut or even if it hasn't, and it shoots OK, you might consider cutting it to your preferred length.

Sounds like the Military Model based on barrel length. Cutting a barrel is easy. Harder is fitting a new front sight. Not sure how short you can go before you are into the extractor lug. A wonder sight

is an easy way to put an adjustable rear sight on a revolver. Or, trade your 1950 for something like this.

Les, Did you ever get this done.

Kevin

StrawHat,
I did not have this done. The 1950 has significant value as original that would be diminished if barrel was cut. I happened upon a 396 NG in .44 Spl. that does very well for what I wanted and weighs much less.
Thanks for the interest.
