If that number came from the base of the grip frame, and if there were no letter pre-fixes.. (a part of the serial number), then your gun was probably shipped in 1955.
A couple of pictures would help.
Some of the more knowledgeable members will have to help you with the value depending on more information about your gun.

That is where the ser # came from, sorry no pics at this time, but I'll work on it. I have the box in good condition w/ all paperwork.
