Saw model-39, Sn.6183 and had to buy it. A nice clean, long extractor 39 with the long tang frame. But the grips and slide were from the pre-39 era. The de-cocker is of the short lever de-cocker and no cut out left grip. The gun shipped as 1of3 to a dealer on Feb.18, 1858. It was a Tuesday shipment. The gun came with a numbered to gun large blue box, green booklet, and two
flat ramp follower mags with 9MM/S&W base plates. I think it is a factory correct gun with parts that were in the bins. What say you!

Larry, the steel frames started to be released years later in the 30K,60K and 80K serial number range. That is not to say the assemblers were not cleaning out the parts bins at their stations. We forget something as collectors, these were just 9MM guns that had to assembled and trucked out. You had a floor supervisor walking around counting the guns that got completed. Plus, I think they did it on purpose, to drive us crazy in later years. And they chuckled.

I'd say the WHOLE GUNE is pre-39! :) Ok, we know you meant 1958. Seriously that sounds like a fun, interesting find. Do you have a chance to post pics of the complete package? It's great that it was able to stay together.

Todd, no I meant 1858, an extremely early prototype hand made by ole DB Wesson himself. Wink! Man, I got fingers the size of cucumbers.
Het Todd, GUNE?!

SCS&W 4th page 342....picture and a paragraph on " pre 39s'' differences to model numbered guns.

S&W was famous for never throwing anything away..... bet you have a "transitional" gun from 1958.

I have a +90% 4" Model 27-3 that has a -2s recessed cylinder but the -3 barrel is not pinned.
