I am considering using my Mod.51 as trade stock. May I enlist from the learned S&W experts a possible worth for an, as new, Mod 51 without the box, papers, or tools. Ser.# is M640XX, period grips & bright blue. I am unable to post photos but consider this as an as New Gun, if it has passed other than factory rounds through it the residue has been very skillfully cleaned away. The normal line on the cylinder is almost invisible. Thank you.

I would say $500 to $550 tops. A dealer in town here has had one for sale for $600 for a long time. Collectible but not real popular.

I'm no expert, but I would agree with ken158's opinion. It is going to take the right person to get a decent price for your pistol.

Best of luck,

Dave

I did a search on that very popular auction site and in the last 30 days 5 sold in the $625-$675 area and one sold at $450 with chipped stocks and bluing ware, plus another $50-$60 for shipping and FFL charges, so there are people out there willing to pay premium prices, some of the guns sold in a week and some took longer. Now you ain't gonna get that kinda action at a gun show, a dealer is gonna offer maybe $300-$350 on a trade, now if you find another Smith guy walkin' around and he "really needs" a m51 who knows. To get the most out of your Smith sell it here, set your price and see what happens, or go the that other place and put it up for auction......For what it's worth that's how I see it...

Thanks for the help, I am aware that the dealers will not offer its worth because they need to profit or they are not in business. What you have done is given me a place to start and I really appreciate it.
