I recently acquired a mod 51. I checked the serial # tonight and was surprised to find the serial # was not stamped on the frame but was on the crane. The only thing stamped on the frame is MOD 51.

Is this the way Smith and Wesson marked them back then.

The serial # is 314xx. Any idea when this pistol was made?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The number on the yoke is an ID number used during manufacture of the gun. The serial number on an S&W revolver is always found on the bottom of the grip frame. If it is not there, it is likely it has been removed. Your 51 should have a number there. Take another look for it.

Your M-51 may have oversize target stocks

What M29since14 said is correct, you revolver may have target grips which would cover the Number Stamped on the bottom of the grip frame. If you are unable to see the metal frame with the grips installed you will need to remove them to get the number. Sure hope there is one as this is not legal to own with no S/N and quite the red tape hassle to have it restored.
