I have come across a mod 547 today, 9mm, 4 In. From what I ahave read in the internet, this was originally made for the Palestinians as ordered by the Israeli govt. Can anyone share their experience with this revolver. This particular piece appears used, about 90%, with Pachy grips. I tried chambering some rounds in it an seems to extract well(unfired rounds). Oh, and it does not require any moonclips. What would be the going rate for this pistol? Thanks.

**I think I should have placed this post in the '81 and newer section

I have a 4" Model 547 & it's one of my favorite revolvers..
The extractor segments do a great job extracting spent cartridges & are made of berilium copper as are several pins & the ratchet star..
My example is very accurate & is very fun to shoot..
I have the factory manual to this revolver on my hard drive if you'd like me to email it to you just give me an email @ [email protected]
Also you'll see that these revolvers are worth a little more than your standard K Frame & would estimate thier value between $650-$900..

When this model first came out there was an extensive review in the American Rifleman that stated that the 547 was developed for the French police who decided not to order it. The French did adopt revolvers made by Ruger and Manurhein and some are still in use today. Whether there is any veracity in the Israeli-Palestinian request I don't know, but this has been circulating on the web for a while now.

I think everyone who has ever had a 547 & has internet access in the past few years has seen this page, Don't know if it's right or wrong but everyone has read it..

That's probobly were the "Isreali" conection "Rumor" started.
I don't know for sure but bet Roy Jinks does..

Headknocker,

Thanks for your reply.
The price that the shop was selling it for was "a lot lower" than what you gave as an estimate. I now have to scrounge up some funds to give this baby a proper home. How do you find the recoil and such, say compared to a K frame shooting .38 special? Maybe a Model 10? I realy find a 9mm semi like an M&P9 to be mild. I have never shot a 9mm revolver before.

You'll find that the 9mm revolver doesn't punish you but is quick "Snappy" but fairly mild in the 547 K Frame but the same rounds through either one of my J Frame 940s I find the recoil not unpleasant but fierce..
I'd snap that 4" 547 up if your able to aquire it for less than $650 IMO..
Give me an email & I'll send you the PDF & JPG vertions of that manual, It's very interesting & gives detailed instructions on how to disassemble the cylinder & replace the extractor segments..
I'm still looking for a 3" Round Butt 547 to fill my collection of S&W 9mm Revolvers..

I have a 3inch 547 myself, and it's one of my favorites. I read about it at first in gun magazines in the early eighties, but it's only twenty years later I managed to get one for the equivalent of about 200$. This particular gun must have had a very interesting story, as it came from a police officer's widow, who sold it to my gun shop, who only saw it as a difficult to sell variant of the M&P series, which was my fortune of course. I personally think it has been a kind of test gun, probably with the hope to interest the Belgian Police for the project too, but I have no evidence at all for that, except for its outstanding manufactory.

I had it lettered by Roy Jinks, and it seemed to be one of the early pilot runs (one of the first 152 build between 1979 and 1981). It has one of the very best actions I have ever laid my hands on, and it still has the pinned barrel, a feature dropped later in the full production run. I load very mild 9mm ammo for it, FMJ 123gr, and with that load it's incredibly accurate, even at ranges between 10 and 25 yards. The original grips have been lost through time sadly. It came with Pachmayrs, which I changed to Ahrends, and it's a gun only to be described with superlatives. Never had one single failure what so ever, including extraction.

In very short, its story is as follows. Around 1977, the French Police asked S&W to develop a 9mm revolver with the intent to renew their range of .32 pistols with something more powerful. A specific request was it would not use clips, but the gun should operate as classical revolvers for chambering and extracting cartridges. S&W started developing the gun, and the very first one was produced in 1978, as experimental model 47. The original intent was to produce 4inch guns only. Some first pilot runs were made in 1980 and 1981 (the other 151 as mentioned before) and were then officially named model 547, of which only a minority had 3inch barrels. It's only in 1983 when full production started, to be dropped of the catalogues in 1984 for lack of bad sales, as in the meantime the French Police adopted a French product, the Manurhin revolver (which is also a very high quality product I must admit, but I prefer S&W), and which has now been dropped for semi-auto's. Total production according Roy Jinks is 10,270 units, of which a majority seems to have 3inch barrels (about roughly 2/3).

My advice out of my own experience is to grab it when you see one, and hold to it. It's a gun with a story, and a great shooter too. Each time it comes with me to the range, after the very first shots, I have that silly grin of my face of pure admiration and satisfaction. It's a true S&W in the best tradition, the ultimate M&P ?

Question : are your 547 also scaringly precise, or is this just further good luck I had ?

Belgian686 my personal M547 in the 4" pinned barrel is very accurate with just about every load I've tried through it..
It brings a smile to my face whenever I shoot it too..
It's dead on to about 75 yards were I have to overhold on the target at 100+ yards..
I'm always looking for a 3" 547 to be a carry weapon..
Guess I'll have to be happy with my two 940s for that..
FOR NOW!!:D

I am really fond of 9mm wheelguns. I started out with the 940, using it as a BUG for my Browning HP. I found that I could reload the 940 from the HP mag really rapidly and easily if necessary. I still use it that way, but in the meantime I have picked up 3 other 940s (one a 3 inch barrel), both 547s, 3 Ruger Sp101s in 9 (one 3 inch) and 3 Speed Sixes from Ruger 2 2.75 inchers and a 4 inch that was done over by C&S for extreme accuracy and reliability. Reloading with the moon clips is as fast as slapping in a mag, if a little short on round count.
I also have a 2" M60 with an extra fitted 9mm cylinder, and a 60-4 likewise fitted.
With the proper ammo the 9mm is a real fire breather and will equal many .357 loads in factory loads. I liked a +P load with a 124 gr JHP. It seems to be the best all around load for revolver or auto.

I started looking for one a couple years ago - partly in response to the continued rise in ammo prices -- and was intrigued by the unique extractor/pin system. As luck would have it, I snagged a 3" RB variant at the San Francisco gun show last year.

It is snappy, but let me tell you -- this is an accurate little revolver! I've done work out to 80-90 yards outdoors -- fooling around at first -- but then found I could keep the rounds within 18" without trying too hard.

It's done....put it on layaway. It was actually a 3 inch model. I'll have some pictures up after the homecoming. This waiting is killing me.

neon8,

Good decision. I bought my first 547, a 4" barrel, NIB, in 1985 visiting a gun shop whilst my wife was shopping. Three years later I picked up a 4" and a 3" that came out of Israel. I know this because I knew the fellow who made regular trips to Israel to import surplus arms for resale. My two were part of about a dozen that came with a bunch of FALs. In the mid 90s, I picked up a couple of more used 4" models. Even though thore 3" models were made, I never see them; but sure would like to pick up one or two. I wish S&W would re-introduce the 547 in both barrel lengths and, maybe enve make a 647.

Enjoy your 547 and post photos.

Gary,
You are hurting my head now..... trying to remember if I got this with Bananas.... really can't remember.
Probably right, it's been so long, this was a used gun.
I don't like the Bananas so it's also possible that I changed them to the magnas.

sorry, just an old guy trying to remember, not working well tonight!
