Looking at a Mod 60 no dash to purchase at my lgs and wanted to know what a fair asking price would be and what you could tell me about the gun. Not really knowledgeable about these revolvers.

What I know so far is the bore looks very good. Gun is in very good condition overall. Grips are wood, not sure if they are the original ones. Looking at pictures of the Mod 60, they could very well be the original grips. Really not sure what else to look for in these older smiths. If you have any questions I could answer to help you help me I would appreciate it.

This question is not as easy to answer as it may seem. When you check the book you will find 5 variations of the Model 60. 1. The original 60 in 38 Special w/o the letter prefix in the s/n and bright satin finish. 2. The 38 Special 2" or 3" with letter prefix s/n (this includes the -4 with the full lug barrel and adjustable sights). 3. The 357 Magnum version. 4. The Model 60LS (Ladysmith). 5. The Model 60 Pro series 357.

I am going to make an assumption it is the most common Model 60, 2" 38 Special, fixed sights. The Blue Book shows in 70% condition $200. In 98% Condition $450. In real life these figures are low in my observance, and are more commonly priced in the $325 to $550 range. They are an excellent carry gun.

Does having the serial number help? AES2088
It's a short barrel (not sure of the length)
It looks to me like a bright stainless finish.
LGS is asking $579. I would be able to purchase for $525 plus tax.
Not sure if that is a decent price. Thanks

Check for timing, lock-up, and push off issues. Check trigger pull both single and double action, as well as overall condition; often the condition of the grips can give you a good general idea of the overall condition.

Trigger pull seems very good, both in sa and da. Timing and lock appears to excellent and tight.

That serial# dates to approx 1984. For the money, it seems like a decent deal.

does it have the original box, papers etc ? sounds alittle high at 550ish out the door,it's your call tho.

No box or papers. Just the gun. Yea, sounds a bit high to meet too. He was asking $579. I couldn't talk him any further down than $530 plus SC tax.

Have one that looks NIB. Probably fired but very little. They are bringing from 600 to 700 in these parts.

For a shooter it's on the high end, but I don't think you're getting hurt to bad. Maybe get him to throw in a couple of boxes or ammo, a padded case, or your pick from his giant box of used holsters. (What? Don't all LGS have a giant box of used holsters?)

I bought one a no dash model 60 at the LGS for $400.00 cash last fall. I had a trigger job done on it & had it cleaned up for $100.00. Its worth what you are willing to pay for it period end. Drop the cash & walk out with it."Its all good"!

MY LGS has a big box of used holsters usually at $5 to $25.
That seems a little steep for an unpinned barrel that is shooter grade. Unless you have to have it..you might wait a bit and start searching for that gun at other places.. GunB, this Forum...gun shows...
Look at it this way..you can buy a new model 60 3" pro series in .357 mag for about $650-$675 OTD. Now compare that to what you are looking at. I bought a Model 60 from 1967..1st or 2nd year with original box and papers for $700 last summer. #1 in H Richards list. Very hard to find.

But.. a good model 60 is worth what you are willing to pay. They are worth their weight in SS. SO don't let all this mumbo jumbo keep you from doing what you want to do. There are very few bad guns that you buy..It's a great gun..what you pay is your prerogative. And in a month that will all be a distant memory anyway.

One has been sitting in the LGS for a few months at $650.no box or papers but nice grips. Definitely not a steal....
BTW the 60's were made with 3" barrels too that are frequently sought after as a nice carry weapon. And, many guys like the Lady Smith....

look at the new j-frames to see what the prices are. the price is on the high side. hard to beat an old school model 60, but sometimes the price of the newer j-frames out weight the high price of used j-frame from gun stores.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help. It's really in nice shape. The trigger seems pretty nice as well. The bore is in very good condition and the grips look practically new. But yea, he (LGS) isn't really doing me that great of a deal. And nothing else with the gun either. And I didn't know it had an unpinned barrel.

Funny part is I have been checking GB and GA out the past week to see what the Mod 60's were going for and what kind of shape they were in. Seeing what I saw and knowing what prices these were going for I initially thought I was getting a better deal than I was.

I have been looking at J frames for weeks and I'm getting impatient, damn it. LOL I was hoping to get my first taste of J frame fame.

I picked up a Model 60 No Dash today about 98% with box/papers but, no tools. ser# R134xxx (1975?) for $480 otd Not a steal but, I feel ok with that price.

Lot better deal than what I was offered. I went back again to day to look at the 60. Decided to pass on the deal. Maybe another 60 will come along.
