Looking for info on the Mod 64-1 4" in 357 mag. I haven't been able to gather much info other that some where between 750 to 1200 were built. The one I have has adjustable rear sight and a front sight with a opaque insert. Heavy barrel.
The SN starts with D. I box has the same SN as the gun.

Never heard of a Model 64 with an adjustable sight. You sure it’s not a 66?

No it's a 64-1. I had to look twice to make sure. If I could figure out how to post a picture I would.

Welcome! There is a factory .357 model 64 that would have had a D prefix, but it did not come from the factory with an adjustable rear sight or front sight insert. Photos would really help here.

I didn't think the front was factory but the rear looks like it's factory.
The box I got with it has 64 as the model but looks like it gas been over written with 65.

Sorry OP, you have a modded Model 64. Period.
The frame is the fixed-sight version.
The sight is longer than the channel that was cut for it - a sloppy error. The sight should have been cut at the end of the milling in order to at least resemble a real S&W adjustable-sight gun.
As was previously noted, that is not a "normal" S&W front sight.

The Model 65, just like the 64, is a fixed-sight gun.
Your posts make it sound like you dearly want to have some sort of unicorn, but alas, it is not to be.

I've personally had adjustable sights put on fixed-sight guns. It's a simple mill job of the top strap followed by a cut across the back for the adjusting portion. $100 at most gunsmiths.

Incidentally, I don't know a thing about 64-1s that were made for .357 Magnum. Maybe, maybe not. One thing though, would be that the years the 64-1 was produced, Magnum cylinders were recessed. Is this gun?

Well, here's a good thing/bad thing.
First the good: According to the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, the Model 64-1, .357 Magnum edition, was made for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol in 1972. It was considered the prototype for the Model 65. It was also the introduction of the heavy barrel on a stainless-steel K frame-sized firearm.
The bad: Someone took a first-edition gun, possibly an OHP issue (is there anything on the box about OHP?) and "Bubba'ed" it with those adjustable sights, which takes any collector value your gun may have had and tossed it right out the window.
Trust me on this: I really do feel for ya, and I hope the seller didn't give you one of those "RARE!!!" stories.

It is not difficult to make the cuts and install adjustable sights on a fixed sight frame. Also the sight tangs come in several lengths

The good thing is, you have a great shooter with a lot of custom work done at somebody else's expense.

Enjoy it.

I got 2 guns for a very very good deal at 5 Franklins. Got the 64-1 and an all matching 5" V Victory with British proof marks that isn't US Property marked. Yes the front sight is pinned over the original front sight. Yes Smith did at the tail end of the 64-1 run do some in 357 Mag for commercial sales. Yes the rear adjustable was added at some time. Overall the gun is has seen very little use and is in great condition. I am not a collector of Smiths other than V Victory guns. The 64-1 will most likely go up for sale down the line unless I like it. Thanks for everyone post.
