Mod 657-0 4"

I recently came across one of these and decided I had to have it. It was allegedly once owned by Hank Williams Jr. Hank owns a shop in Montana and maybe a letter will show this as being shipped there. I don't expect any more provenance than that but I paid for the gun and not the story. S C of S&W shows that this model was introduced in 1986 and the 4" was discontinued in 1988. Maybe a letter will show how many were made but until then, does anyone know how many of these were produced, especially in the 4"? I've never seen a 4" stainless 41 magnum for sale with a hammer mounted firing pin and no MIM or wart and was very happy to be able to pick this one up.

I don't know how many were made, but given the distribution between the 3" and 4" versions, I would guess 800-1000. There were ~3500 of the 3" version made (factory letter). I have seen far more 3" guns for sale than 4"

The story of how I got my first 4" 657 is long, so let's just say that I came across it by accident? I was young and foolish and traded it for a 4x4 Silverado Suburban (great deal for me at the time). It took almost 30 years before I found another 4" for sale, and I grabbed it. I came across the 3rd about 2 years ago and grabbed it too

Howdy Charlie, Nice find, the 4" 657 was made for about a year and a half.
I have one that's NIB, it sits next to the custom 520 3 1/2" i bought from you. A call to S&W you may get the number made, I'll bet it's under 1k. I think more 657 Mt.Guns were made than the standard 4" barrel.

When it comes to production guns, Smith and Wesson does not keep track of total numbers manufactured broken down by configuration.

BTW Charlie, is that 657 really a -0 engineering revision?

I know that Model 57 had a -0 engineering revision, but I never heard of there being a -0 revision of the 657
