I have a Mod 68, NIB, AEU45XX serial number range, that has a LAPD Sgt shield on the side plate and "Los Angeles Police Department" on the barrel. It is in a standard box so it doesn't appear to be a commerative. Is this an issue revolver, a presentation/award revolver or what?

LAPD officers were permitted to private purchase revolvers and have their badge engraved on it. The model 68 is a .38 special double action only version of the model 66. They are still authorized for officers who started before the dept went to semi autos. Their numbers decline each year as theses officers retire.

It may be a retirement presentation piece given to an officer at retirement or a special order by the officer himself.

model 68

They were made back in the mid 80's sometime after the CHP commerative model. They are 6" model 66's overstamped with 68, and the cylinder will only accomodate 38 special, so they met dept regulations. They are a commerative model, but lots of guys carried them. They came unaltered, but had to be modified to fire double action only to be allowed to be carried.
The only special markings on the outside is Los Angeles Police Department on the barrel. Any shield or other markings were put on by individuals, alot of guys did it. Bob

Finally had a chance to post some pics. Notice there is no number engraved on the badge.

That's really great looking! Where would they go to get the lettering, etc. done?

Does anyone know what it would cost to have a barrell marked with your own favorite lettering?

Here is a mdl.68 Ca. Highway Patrol Comm.

dscampbell, the 67 does not have the shrouded ejector rod like the 68. I thought the 68 was a 38 sp only version of the 66.

LAPD Mod 68

Checkman, I you are serious about wanting one, there are a couple Mod 68's on Gun Broker.com now. One is a LAPD, the other is a CHP commerative.

Our previous chief was an Asst. Chief with LAPD. Had his old 67 in a glass case in his office. It was city issued as a DAO he told & he had his shield engraved on the side plate. The privately owned wheelguns were modified in the armory to DAO. The 68 is an odd one, but cool regardless.

Thanks for the comments. I just picked up another Mod. 68 circa 1977 (first year). This one is a CHP duty revolver. The original CHP stamping has NOT been overstamped. Shows honest dings and scratches. Has later speed loader cut stocks which I'm not sure are correct. The only reference I can find for the changeover to this style says "mid 1970's". I don't recall seeing this style until about '79 or '80. Any additional information will be appreciated.
