The early model 686 revolvers were apparently recalled and someone may have already discussed the reason for the recall but I missed it if it was discussed. Will someone please be so kind as to explain the problem and the fix? Appreciate your help!

Sure. i bought one of the first 686s in the store, and had no trouble until I fired some Federal .357 ammo that flowed the primer back into the firing pin hole and locked the action.
S&W replaced the firing pin and bushing NC plus paid shipping both ways.
They marked an "M" after the serial number under the yoke.

OKFCO5, appreciate the info. Another question; Anyone who knows please, will they continue to perform the modification after all this time has elapsed since the no dash guns were built? I am working on a potential trade for a no dash 686 and this is important information with regard to the trade. Thanks again, Sam

They are still honoring the recall and have been paying the shipping both ways. You might shoot some 125 grain bullets through it when you get it. Some guns have no trouble and do not need the upgrade. Some folks have it fixed just because of the recall. We had over 20 of the early guns and I don't recall having a problem with them prior to the recall. We fixed them anyway.

Glad to hear your positive response Nightowl, I have requested the present owner contact the factory and go through the deal of having it taken care of. Your reply is really good news, thanks, and a "Big Thank You" to the other replier also. As usual, you guys are great.
