I have a model 10-5. D serial# should land it in 1970. It's marked on the back strap as being a Metro Police District of Columbia revolver. I got it with Packmyer good-years on it but I would like to get it back to how it came from the factory.

So which grips are the correct ones?? According to the SC S&W, "About 1967-1968 the uncheckered diamond center around the escutcheon and nut were eliminated on all checkered wood stocks". So I would guess I should stay away from them.

Thanks

Non Diamond Magna's probably

Below pics are my Model 10-5, s/n D 531562, shipped June 1973 per Roy Jinks. Mine is no beauty queen, but shows typical wear from being carried by a retired LEO for bucoo years. It is tight and shoots very well. Grips are what came on it when he got it new years ago.

So I would think, non diamond Magna's like these would be correct for yours if you are in that serial number range.

PS: The standard service Magna's like on my gun are also known as PC (Plain Clothes) because of the rounded surfaces on the butt, so as to not snag or catch on coats when drawing.

Yes, the non-diamond grips should be correct and should be easier to find.

Here are two 10-5s. Top is 1966 production and the bottom one, sans diamond, is 1968.

PC Magna stocks were standard on the Model 10 and on the .38 M&P before model numbers, starting in about 1954. As others have noted, yours would lack the diamond at the screw location.

Here are a couple additional photos showing the correct stocks with the rounded bottom from two angles:

The diamond on PC stocks was ordered eliminated by management order #937 on October 11, 1965. This was the first such order issued. The same action was taken on other stocks over the next two years. So, the SCSW is generally correct, but the process was not even over the various styles. In any event, we don't see the diamond disappearing for the most part until about 1967, as stocks on hand were used up.
