Is a 10-5 with a D prefix serial number possible? The Catalog says D prefix began in 1967 but it also says that the -6 began in 1962. I know with S&W there was no wasted parts and that stuff was used out of order but is this 5+ year cross over even possible?

The D prefix was used from 1968 into 1977, and even afterwards using digits in front of the D.

D1 – D90,000…………….....1968
D90,001 – D330,000……..1969 -70
D330,001 – D420,000……1971 – Early 72
D420,001 – D510,000……Late 1972 – Early 73
D510,001 – D659,901……Late 1973 – Early 1974
D659.902 – D75000……...Late 1974 – Early 1975
D750,001 – D870,000……Late 1975 – Early 1976
D870,001 – D999,999……Late 1976 – Early 1977
2D00001 - 2D80,000…….1977
2D80,001 – 3D99,999……1978
4D00001 – 6D10,000…….1979
6D10,0001 – 7D10,000.…1980
7D10,001 – 9D44,500…...1981
9D44,501 – 17D8,900….…1982
17D8,901 – 21D0883……..1983

The key here is what Alan mentioned. The -6 did not replace the -5. They were two different lines that were manufactured concurrently.

The -5 was replaced by the -7 in 1977.
The -6 was replaced by the -8 in 1977.

Ok. I got it. I thought it was a replacement. Thank you for the clarification.

These are the changes through 10-8. Note the differences between heavy barrel and standard barrel changes:

10-1 (1959): heavy barrel
10-2 (1961): change extractor rod thread for standard barrel
10-3 (1961): change extractor rod thread for heavy barrel, change front sight width from 1/10" to 1/8"
10-4 (1962): eliminate trigger-guard screw on standard barrel frame
10-5 (1962): change sight width from 1/10" to 1/8" for standard barrel
10-6 (1962): eliminate trigger-guard screw on heavy-barrel frame
10-7 (1977): change gas ring from yoke to cylinder for standard barrel
10-8 (1977): change gas ring from yoke to cylinder for heavy barrel

The problem with the model 10 is that they were a popular police issue revolver. There are many police trade ins selling for prices way lower than than other S&W's. Same with the model 64's which were the stainless version. Check GunBrokers prices.
