Looking for a quick answer from one of you wise folks. Is a 5" model 10-5 going to be a tapered (pencil) barrel or not? I've seen one picture that I swore looked like the non-tapered barrel, and I just saw a pic of a different gun, same model, that appeared to be tapered, so now I'm confused. This model doesn't look too fancy, does it? Kinda plain? What is a good starter book for a new S&W collector? The Standard Catalog? Any suggestions?

A 10-5 with a 5" barrel will be tapered.

Thanks for the quick response. How does anybody feel about the front sight on these? Even though they're dark, are they pretty easy to pick up because they're so high profile?

I have a 4" 10-7 standard (pencil) barrel. I got it a few weeks ago. I am finding the front sight easy to acquire. This is my first Model 10. I have had a Model 15 for many years which i have learned to shoot pretty well. The 10-7 sights are becoming pretty familiar after about 500 rounds.

I was having some difficulty picking up the black sights on the Mod 10-5. A little orange or red paint fixes the problem. No problem now. If I want to remove the paint that is also easily removed with paint thinner.

When I first start shooting S&W's with the sights like the model 10 I hated them compared to the adjustable sight models. But after shooting them for a while I got used to them and they are fine.

:) If I didn't have a Model 10 or a Model 15 I would
choose the Model 15. I think they have better sights. Don

The 10-5 a classic S&W! Which one is better? Boy that one is personal, but in my view it's how its going to be used, in a rough and tumble world the fixed sight model is better. Other than that is is a matter of your taste. I have em both!

So which do you like better? The mod 10 or 15?

Actually in my case I shoot my model 10 better than my pre-15. They are both accurate but I am able to shoot the model 10 more consist at the range than the pre-15. I guess it is me.

The big disadvantage to the Model 10 is that the sights can't be easily adjusted.

I have both in 2" versions and for me the fixed sights work better for me on shorter barrels. I also prefer the fixed sight guns for CCW. Less likely to get hung up on clothes ect.
