We're they rare? And do we know if they were carried by Alot of police? Mine appears to have holster wear on it

Not rare. Made from 1962 until about the end of 1976. It has a tapered barrel and a 1/8" front sight.
Lots of police officers all around the country carried the Model 10, including the dash 5.

The Model 10-5 with 4 inch barrel was a revolver carried by lots of Police as it was before the transition to semi auto's that happened in the late 70's. These were the main go to revolvers until the 28-2 Highway Patrolman became the standard in 357 Magnum.

Very true, fyimo. Even Barney Fife carried an M&P (probably a prewar gun - or at least, pre-model, from the looks of it on reruns).
It is interesting, though, that there was some variation around the country, in terms of who gravitated to what. I grew up in California in the '50s and '60s and the California Highway Patrol was already carrying the Model 28 as far back as I can remember. In El Cajon, when I was a teenager, ECPD had a fairly loose policy about what officers could carry. A friend and shooting mentor to my brother and me was an officer named Eldon Carl (whom Jeff Cooper once called the best practical pistol shot in America). Eldon carried a Model 29 on duty. I saw it many times. I guess he was the original Dirty Harry. This was several years before the movie came out.

Not rare, one of the most popular revolvers ever. I reluctantly traded mine in for a 686. Wish I still had it, and the 686. Darn well made gun. If I were you I'd use it for SHOOTING.:)

Here's my10-5 with a 2" barrel. A daily companion. If you're not sure of its' condition, have it checked out. Then shoot it, a lot.

Welcome to the forum! You will love that gun!

I have one and it is a great shooter - that's why they made so many of them.

Again, welcome to the forum.
