Hey guys!

What year range were the Model 10-6 produced in?

I have a CAI marked re-import from AIM I believe some time ago.

From what I'm reading the 10-6 heavy barrel was made from 1962 to 1977. A friend of mine has one of the re-imports and was told it came back from Australia. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will come along and let us know. I've got one my uncle purchased new in 1962. It looks like the 10-6 were made at about the same time as the 10-5 tapered barrels.

Did I remember right that some 10-6s were chambered in .357 for a LE agency resulting in the Model 13? It was a long time ago I read this in a gun magazine.

Yes. Special Order for the NY State Police. I think in about 1974. The Model 13-1 was originated as a result (there was no Model 13 without a dash number, except for the Aircrewman, which was a completely different handgun).

Here is a picture of my 10-6 with heavy barrel, on the right. On the left
is my 10-5. The 10-6 was issued to police officers on the Boise Police
Department in the 1960s and 1970s. The 10-5 was issued to the plain
cloths officers. Used by many law enforcement agencies during those
years.

2nd from left is the 10-6 in a Jordan Border Patrol holster by Hume.
It was specified by BPD in black, plain or basket weave.
CORRECTION: That happens to be my model 19 in the Hume
Jordan Border Patrol holster.

3rd from left is the 10-5 in a Lewis cross draw. Favored by many plain
cloths cops, like Sergeant Friday for an example.

As charlie sherrill posted, Model 10-5 and Model 10-6 were produced concurrently.
10-5s are standard barrel profiles in 2,3,4,5 & 6 inch barrels.
10-6s are heavy barrels in 2,3 and 4 inch barrels. To my knowledge the 10-6 was never offered with a 5 or 6 inch barrel.

The Model 10 series was widely exported, especially the heavy-barrel variants dash 6 and 8 (1960s to 1980s).

Century has at various times unloaded batches from Australia, Canada, France, and Jordan, plus some Latin American countries. Not all foreign contracts are listed in the SCSW or can be lettered as many bought from distributors rather than factory-direct. Some can be identified by markings, others are unmarked or have foreign stampings with meanings that are still disputed.

So if all you have is the CAI marking on the gun, there are lots of interesting possibilities.

JP xxx marked S&W Model 10

Mine has JP596 in front of the trigger guard. It's a CAI re-import. Any story/origin you know of?

There are several theories, but the one I believe (and I own a 10-5 marked JP115), is that it stands for Jordan Police or Jordan (border) Patrol. I can’t find a link to it now, but a trading post surplus dealer had a few of these and wrote in the description extensively about this. I believe yours is a 10-5, too.

Mine has JP 1164 stamped on the frame in front of trigger guard.
