I just picked up a Model 10-8 With a pinned Heavy Barrel. On the side it has been stamped with C.A.I. Georgia, VT, which I have found out means it has been used out of the country and been brought back into the US. How would I go about finding the history of this pistol and the year it was made. From reading I understand it was made prior to 1981 due to it having a pinned barrel. Any suggestions?

The Serial # is 4D04XXX on the bottom of grip frame.
The # next to the swing arm 05313 and I believe it is D&W right below it. The letters are blurred and almost look like it was a hand stamp or had vibrated when it was struck.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Looks like your 10-8 was manufactured in 1979, and most likely went to a foreign law enforcement/security agency. Not sure on how best to track the "where." S&W may have simply shipped it to an exporter with a foreign contract, but if they shipped it direct, may have a record of the "where to." Other possibility would be to contact Century Arms and see if they would oblige you by letting you know from whence they imported these. Never tried that, but may be worth a shot. Best of luck in any case, and congrats on your new Smith.

I have a heavy barrel 10-8 that was re-imported recently from the Victoria Police in Australia. Evidently quite a few came in and were handled by several distributors. Mine is in excellent condition, made about 1980. It some how sneaked back into the country with no re-import marks. They missed this one I guess!

I suspect that none of those had import marks. They may have been sent to S&W as factory trade-ins and then sold by S&W back to domestic wholesaler/dealers.

I am guessing that because I have one of the trade-in guns, a 10-11. A friend also has one, a 10-10. Neither have the import markings (such as are on my Mosin rifles).
