Model 10-8 trigger stud

I just bought a Model 10-8 today. Everything seemed fine when I looked over it at the store. Got home and dry fired it a few times and the double action started messing up. It will rotate the cylinder, the hammer moves forward, but it doesn't go back. Single action is fine. I took the side plate off and found that the trigger stud is not attached to the frame.

The store is closed tomorrow, and I doubt they will return it since the have "all firearm sales final" signs.

If I can't get my money back, what are my options?

The factory should be able to repair it for you. If the store won't do what's right, you can try calling or e-mailing S&W......1-800-331-0852

If you can't get your money back. Find a good gunsmith that has one of these.

The brazed in studs of all S&Ws built since the 1950s are a factory repair! They have the correct jigging to drill out the broken stud and install a threaded one. No conscientious gunsmith would even attempt this repair!


If you are dealing with a reputable store they should send the gun to S&W for you under their "store warrantee", at no cost to you.

I called the shop today. He said he would refund my money if his gunsmith can't fix it. I'm betting I'll be getting my money back. On a positive note, Smith and Wesson emailed me instructions for a prepaid envelope. They said they would have to evaluate it and contact me with an estimate.

My experience with the all-too-frequent broken trigger stud issue is that you are far, far better off just going to S&W's shop with it.
I have a 686 that will never shoot again after I made an unwise choice to forgo the Smith shop.

Broken hammer and trigger studs are one of the very few things I send a gun back to Smith for. The exact location of those is very critical and there isn't an easy way to map that location due to the frame geometry.

The gun shop called today. He is sending it to Smith and Wesson. Hopefully they can fix it and possibly refinish it.

Originally he was going to see if his gunsmith could fix it. He called and said he talked to Smith and they sent him a label. I imagine Smith is at least going to see if it can be fixed.

Let us know what happens. I cannot see the average gunsmith trying to fix this problem, but odds are S&W can.
