I know the usual arguments against .38 special from many but I'm still curious.

I saw a nice Nickel plated Model 10-4 snubby. I'm very tempted to pick it up. Is anyone carrying a model 10 snubnose as their carry weapon? If so is there a particular round you'd recommend? would a swchp round be a good choice and what weight are you guys finding that work well in yours?

I just might have to go back and at least put a deposit on this one. Especially since it's Nickel plated and in pretty decent shape.

Not a model 10, but a Model 66-2 2.5" has been a constant companion in the summer months. .38 special is fine for personal defense in my opinion.

As far as ammunition selection goes, whatever you can find that will hit to the sights is the #1 pick, as shot placement is king regarding low capacity weapons. I personally like Speer's 125grn +p .38 special loading, which is a JHP. This may not be easy to find for you in these times however.

I would pick something in the flavor of a SWC or a JHP of some sort, as long as they hit to the sights. I have heard good things across the board about Federal's Gold Medal Match .38 wadcutters for snubs that will be socially used.

You may find the sights on that model 10 to be regulated to shoot 158grain stuff- Hornady's XTP is what I was using when messing around with a model 64 (now my sister's) for CC.

158gr SWCHP was the old FBI load...... nothing wrong with it.

Shot placement is King....... double tap is Queen.

All handgun rounds "go through a plate glass window like a brick" ...... but none guarantee a "one shot stop"

Had a 2" nickel 10-4 I sold to a friend to buy a CZ Kadet..... nice guns....I prefer a 2 1/2 or 3 inch 65 or 66..... generally carried with a +P.38 125 hp.

Excellent info. Thank you

The Model 10-6 4” Heavy Barrel and it’s Stainless Steel brother Model 64 are my favorite handguns. With the Magna grips and Tyler Grip Adapter they fit my hand and their weight balances perfectly for me. Alas the world and crime in America has become worse and the revolver has taken a back seat for use on the streets.

However it shines in a role for home defense. In addition gun bans on semi-autos such as in California has folks discovering how useful the K-Frame revolver is.

The 2” barrel for me is to short whereas the 3” and 4” fills the “just right” size.

Model 64, 2" round butt was my concealed carry from 1 976 - 1992 while working before we went to Glocks. Then Glock Model 23. Retirement gift was a Shield 9mm which is my concealed carry now. However if didn't have Shield i would still carry my 64 in its pancake holster from 44 years ago with +P ammo.

Since my surgeries (shoulder, wrist, elbow) I have put the larger semi-autos away for now and gone back to my old K-frame revolvers, 2" Model 64 round-butt daily with a 3" Model 10 square butt kept handy at home.

I still have a pretty good supply of the old Federal 158-SWCHP .38 Special +P (so-called FBI load). I practice with cast 158 SWC loaded to +P level, and that would be a good carry load also.

I have an S&W Model 10-5. Although I don't carry it every day, I do
carry it on occasions. I cannot cite chapter and verse, but I seem to recall
reading that +P ammo is safe to shoot in 10-4 and above.

When I carry the 10-5 it is loaded with Buffalo Bore's version of the old
FBI load. 158-Gr. L.S.W.H.C.-G.C. (Gas Check). They claim 1000 fps
and muzzle energy of 306 ft. lbs. (Probably from a 4"?) Mine is 2".
Buffalo Bore's item # is 20A/20.

Until my back decided to go away and the "peaceful protests" ramped up, I carried a 2" 1963 vintage Model 12-2 loaded with standard pressure Winchester Defend 130 grain JHP ammo in a vintage Clark holster. If my back issues resolve and the country calms down, I'll carry it again.

My very first EDC back in 1979 was a 2" M10 RB in Nickel. I had numerous mechanical issues that caused it to be unreliable (a Factory defect that could not be practically repaired) and so S&W pulled one off their line, stamped my serial number on it and destroyed mine. The replacement was in Blue. I carried that for about two years and decided it was too heavy and bulky so I foolishly sold it to a friend and bought my first M60.

The Blued one was fine and I should have kept it, but back in the very early 80's when I was buying my first house I needed the money.
