Over the last few years I have only seen 3 S&W boxes listed on ebay Australia. The first 2 I purchased, it did appear that I was the only one buying them.
The latest sold for $204.50 many times higher than my early bid.
I find it hard to believe it was because of the sticker saying Model 10-4 apart from that its a common box.
I can only guess that the fuss was to do with the bottle?
Any one know what I'm missing here?

I don't disagree for a minute.
3 bidders at $150, 2 at $200, tells me something of value may be there.

Early last year I was beaten at an auction for a model 41 .22lr kit; included box, 7 3/8 barrel, slide, stop, muzzle break. The winning bid being $550. A few weeks ago, talking to a stranger, after a short discussion realised he was the winning bidder; he said he purchased the kit for the muzzle break only, was after one for years. Used the muzzle break and sold off the rest.
Very disappointed to find out the box went into the bin.

If nothing of obvious value is here then the 3 bidders each wanted something very badly.
Cheers.

There are a few threads here about the relative rarity of the model 10-4, and somewhere in the cleaning tool pile appears to be the original rod and bore brush...not that this adds up to US $216 but I'm staring at the photos really hard :).

How rare is the 10-4? I have an acquaintance who has one listed for sale on a local forum. No box or accessories, but he describes it as 90%. I've done enough business with him that I trust his opinion. I've got a 10-5 and a 10-6, so I'd only be inclined to make an offer if there is something super special about the 10-4.

There have been a few threads about the 10-4 (with a 1/10" front sight, otherwise the same as the common 10-5). They were built for a short time in unclear numbers and there was no consensus as to values.

Well, that certainly clears things up! :)

Seriously, thank you for the information. If it were a 3" barrel, I'd probably contact him, but it's a 4".

I suspect there was no 3" 10-4, but anything is possible (wait for the photos now!).

I think if you can get it at close to the price of a 10-5 it would be a good, and potentially a great deal.

Some small bits of info:

Model 10-2 1961 Changed extractor rod thread to LH on standard barrel
Model 10-3 1961 Same as above, for heavy barrel
Model 10-4 1962 Screw in front of trigger eliminated
Model 10-5 1962 1/10" to 1/8" front sight, on standard barrel

It appears the dash 4 was only made for a short while in 1962
