Model 10 Hammer Nose

Replaced a broken hammer nose on a -5 model 10
and the point that strikes the primer extends
through the firing pin hole with the hammer at rest.
It sometimes drags on a case head.
Should the tip of the hammer nose be flush with the hammer at rest?
If so do I just need to file it to flush?

ALL S&W double action revolver hammer nose strikers retract out of the firing pin bushing hole with the hammer at rest and trigger recovered. The movement should lift the striker about 1/8" off the primer. The rivet holding the striker should be visible outside the frame. If yours is not, there is something wrong. Possibly wrong hammer nose, or the rivet edges are snagging on the frame, or the "bump" on the rebounding slide is sticking. You need to find out what is restricting hammer movement before you stone or file on the striker.
