Model 12 or model 64

I currently own a Smith model 10- round butt, short barrel, blue steel. The gun has some "character"- about the only cosmetically good thing is that the wood grips number to the gun but it shoots great-

I am considering adding a "twin" of sorts- I have the option of a model 12 or a model 64- Both are in good shape, both are similar in price, both are short-barrel guns-

Other than weight and stainless- what would you recommend and why?

Obviously, get both.
Failing that, I'd go for a M12. Not as many of them around. But, if its a -3 or earlier, be sure that the original stocks are there and in good shape. Regular k stocks will not fit the thinner frame.

A M64 would only be my choice if it were going to be exposed to a lot of sweat. Then stainless is the way to go.
Absent that, get the M12. I have a 2" 4 Screw Square Butt M12 and I really like it. I don't shoot +Ps in it very often, but have no problem shooting standard pressure stuff in it. It carries very nicely.
I think if you get one, you'll agree.

Personally I'd go for the Model 12 only because they are getting more difficult to find. When your gun fund is replenished, finding a Model 64 won't be too hard...

Model 12 "no dash"

FWIW it shoots well with standard .38 Special handloads, +P rounds are a little brisk due to the factory grips and alloy frame.

Either are great guns.

The 12 is stout with +P's, but the 64 handles them very nicely.

Slyk, only you can make the final decision. Even though I have not had either, I would get the 64. Have both blued and stainless Smiths. I like the options of being able to shoot the heavier loads without causing potential damage to the gun. I just bought a 65-3, so I could shoot.357 rounds. Will I shoot any, or many, I don't know? But I CAN!
64's being stainless (like my 65 & 67 ) are fairly easy to keep looking good cosmetic wise. Maybe if I shot a 12, I couldn't live without 1. I do like my 1919 M&P, and 10-8. Let us know how you make out! Bob

The Mod 12 is the more rare gun. I coinsider the Mod 12 to be a light duty shooter, but a great carry gun. I would probably buy it since you already have the other 64.

Get Both of course,
The 64 is a better shooter the 12 the bettr carry choice.

BTW factory K grips can be sanded down to fit a model 12.

I have a 2" Model 12 and a 2" Model 64. I carry the Model 64 all the time because I am too lazy to maintain a blue steel gun. The Model 12 really carries nice though. Really nice.
