Model 14-3 serial number/value

Hello,

I recently inherited one from my dad. Masterpiece 14-3 sn 1K28765, 6inch barrel. Curious to know manu date and guesstimate value, sorry no pics. I see one tiny surface rust spot on barrel, 1/8th inch or so spot and thats about it. I'd say condition is near perfect. I don't think he put 100 rounds through it. Other then that one spot it shines like a newly waxed car.

He bought it new, still have original box in nearly perfect shape, parts list dated 1969 looks like it was printed yesterday.

The 1K numbers spanned two years: 1970-71. Yours falls in the 1970 range, but it could have shipped the following year.

Looking at the 3rd edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, I see it being 1970. Hope this helps. Thanks! Mick

And, as for value, It is "priceless" because it was your Dad's. By and large, they can be seen between 5&6 hundred, and up for ANIB. Hope this helps. Thanks! Mick

Agreed on the priceless ideal. I'm 49 and haven't shot or owned one since I was 14. I think I'll be going back to the range for some beginner safety and maintenance classes.

Besides the .38 he left me:

.22 model 41, 5 1/2". Sn puts it at 1971, original box. This is the one we would bullseye every week. I got to shoot 3 rounds of the .38 as a kid due to ammo cost.

Remington Rand 1911A1, sn puts it at 1944.

High Standard .22 revolver, "The Marshall." 1974 I believe.

Victor ejector 12ga, somewhere bewteen 1890-1930.

Mossberg 16ga bolt action 1955.

The Arisaka 99 with mum but so many different series and symbols I'm not sure the exact year. Does have the AA sights with fold down wings. Great condition but is the only one I'm likely to sell.

And 6-7k rounds of ammo, bayonets,daggers. Maybe a squirtgun or two. Ty

Your dad had some really nice stuff. The masterpiece is my favorite S&W. One of mine is always included in whatever bunch I take to the range because it always makes me look better than I think I really am when I shoot it.

Welcome to the S&W Forum, Havmick. It made me feel good to read your posts. When my father passed away almost two years ago, he left me as keeper of his gun legacy. I'm a childless bachelor and one of my brothers and his son have virtually no interest in guns, but fortunately the other brother and his grown daughters are very interested (as well as one of my "nephews in law") so they, and my own accumulation will be able to remain in the family and be appreciated. This even includes a couple that have been in the family since the Civil War. It's always heartening to see a family's gun heritage appreciated and maintained, and although it is sometimes attractive to be able to buy such guns, it is nevertheless a bit sad to see them leave a family when the patriarch passes.

Mine is a 14-4, bought it late last year for $550 which I consider a steal.
