Model 14-4

Does anyone have a break down of the model 14-4. Also any info on the same gun. Thanks

The 1977 dash 4 engineering change was reintroduction of the gas ring sticking out of the front of the cylinder after its absence during the last year and a half of 14-3 production. That year and a half's K frame production were the only revolvers S&W ever produced without a gas ring in the cylinder. If 14-4s are the same as 17-4s the dash number was not increased when S&W ceased pinning barrels in 1981 or 1982 so your barrel could have been installed either way. Some of our collectors think barrel pins are important. I don't.

On a less technical note I used to be able to say I'd gotten under 2" 6 shot groups at 25 yards with every S&W .38 and .357 revolver I'd owned. Their .38s haven't gotten worse but my eyes have and I don't practice enough any more.

I recently bought a 14-3 from 1977. Guns were not sent out in order of serial #'s. A 14 could have been shipped with magna, or target grips. They are a fine target revolver. At 1 time, I downloaded a manual for my S&W Model 10. I do not know if you can do it for a 14. Bob

The S&W Model 14-4 is a great revolver and the transition from the Pinned Barrel happened during their (-4) run so you can get an early one with pinned barrel or a later one without the pinned barrel in that engineering change. The Model 14's were all accurate revolvers and a joy to shoot.
