Long story short. LGS has a Model 15-3, one of my weaknesses for $529.00 or so, can't really remember, but I'm close. comes with a S&W holster, nothing special. The problem is some genius electro-penciled an ID number across the bottom of the side plate. It is limited to the side plate and would require the fitting of a new side plate to make it OK again. The rest of the revolver is a good 90%. Do you think it would be worth the expense to have the side plate replaced and what would be a starting offer for it as is? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

IMHO, At that price with issue(s) I would look for another Mod 15.

My advice: not worth refitting a side plate, or refinishing since the rest of the revolver is in good shape.

This is one you should buy only if the condition and mechanics are so terrific it really speaks to you; if so buy it and live with it, shoot it and enjoy it.

I'd open at $425 out the door if everything else checks out, stressing that the collector's value is lost.

And if you want a pristine Model 15, they can still be fund at decent prices; keep looking.

Very true and good advise. A cohort picked up a beautiful 15-2 a couple of weeks ago with the orignal box, papers and cleaning rod for $525. Private sale.

They are out there..be patient.

I bought a 15-4 in very good condition for $419 out the door a few years ago and those kind of deals are still out there so keep looking. Anything 38 special only sells in the low $400 range because for a little more you can get a 357 magnum K frame that shoots both.

Walk away from that one and never look back.
You would be putting lipstick on a pig.
Major flaw/issue = a $150 gun IMHO.

And mine was $200 with a couple issues - missing thumbpiece and nasty goodyears.
Turned out OK, however.

+1 on the comments above - it's overpriced for the condition. I would put the value in the $275-$350 range for a shooter grade 15. I paid $290 for mine a year or so ago and feel it was a square deal.
