Just curious. Is model 16-4 mostly popular as a collectors item or as a shooter?

YES! :D

The Model 16-4 is as expensive and hard to find as it is because it is popular both as a collector's item and as a shooter, and the competition between these factions (which also overlap of course) raises the price of this latest of the K-32 series much higher than its age and relative rarity would lead one to expect. One of the great regrets of my S&W "career" is the selling of the 6" Model 16-4 I bought when they first came out. :(

About the only thing that would have made it better would have been for the chambering to have been 327 Federal Magnum, but that hadn't been invented yet, and then again if you are a shooter it would be (and has been for several folks) an easy fix to run a chambering reamer into each chamber and make it so. Then again, maybe the bean counters @ Springfield will get a clue and come out with a Model 16-5 or a 616 for the long waiting public... nahh, don't hold your breath! :o

They are popular for both reasons. As the price continues to rise, the popularity as a collector with rise. But they are excellent shooters. I had a beautiful 4 inch that I sold like an idiot. Now im depressed, thanks a lot.

THANK YOU

I acquired a 99%+ possibly unfired one (no box) with 6 inch barrel , combat grips etc.

At first I was going to put it away , but now I think I will start hunting for some ammo for it .

Its not rare enough not too shoot it .

PS. What ammo should I get ? I know very little about .32's

It will handle any 32 handgun cartridge except 32-20 and 327 Fed Mag. Of course the best thing for it is 32 H&R (sorry, I have a hard time calling this round "magnum") but it will also shoot 32 S&W and S&W Long with perfect safety and even 32 ACP. If you should accidentally grab some 32 Colt or 32 Long Colt, they will work, but the brass will swell in a funny way. Don't ask me how I know this! ;) One caution: if you do use anything shorter than the H&R cartridge in your 16-4 be sure to clean the chambers very thoroughly to avoid difficulty when you try later to load the longer ones in it.

Congratulations on a great find... I sort of envy you. I will say FWIW that if it were mine it would almost definitely be rechambered to 327 FM, which as I stated above would be a simple and routine process. JMHO, YMMV.

PS 32 S&W L ammo, especially if you can find target wad cutters, will amaze you with its accuracy. Of course I reload for mine, a practice I highly recommend. :)

Speedloaders

I have done several searches for speedloaders for the S&W M16 but was never lucky. Does anyone know if there are any speedloaders still available for K-frame 6-shot revolvers in .32?

You've gotta look for them, as not all dealers carry them, but HKS Speedloaders™ come in a K-32 model that is made for the Model 16 among others. I actually prefer the spring-loaded Safariland Comp II™ or Jet™ loaders, but there doesn't seem to be enough of a demand to inspire those companies to tool up for this rather small niche. I found the HKS™ loaders I needed (one at a time) at Midway, Graf, and a gun show to get the 3 that I considered a good supply.

I will look for HKS K-32 and charge my sons also with the "Quest for the Speedloader". I want to use it for my .32 S&W Long Korth and don't really shoot it so much that I need many but it would be helpful for someone who prefers to have it and not need it, instead of needing it and not having it :).

Hopefully the new Ruger will revive the market and Smith will get on board with a no-stupid-safety new 16-5

Maybe you're looking in the wrong places...

Just go to Amazon -- they're under $11. Here's a link for you: Amazon.com : HKS 32-K Revolver Speedloader for S&W 16/Taurus 76, 761/K-Frame Size 6 Shot : Gunsmithing Tools And Accessories : Sports & Outdoors@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4129KSjqt6L.@@AMEPARAM@@4129KSjqt6L

New Ruger!

New stainless 327 Magnum offering! Read about it yesterday but am not a Ruger person, hope someone will add the details! I think that's what Ethang is referring to!

The new Ruger? I must have missed it. Can you elaborate a bit?

Ruger Single Seven. It's a seven shot 327 on a Single Six frame. In my humble opinion, the perfect platform for a 327 Magnum. It will make a perfect woods carry pistol for any area where you don't have bears to worry about.

I have had a 32 Mag SS for some years now and hopefully my new 327 will shoot as well. Full power loads for non-edible game, a couple of my 32 mag loads at 1000fps for any edible animals. I am stoked.

The model 16 is definitely popular as both. Dad had one that was a shooter for sure, and one of his good friends had the same.
