Model 17 .22

I am looking to purchase a Model 17 .22.
I was wondering if the new classic models are as good as the older used ones(triggers, etc.)?
I think I would enjoy a .22 wheel gun to shoot along with my Ruger 10/22s and Beretta conversion kit. I plan to use it for target shooting and plinking at various targets off my deck in NC and paper in FL.
I have a used Model 10-8 and really enjoy shooting it along with my 9 mm pistols.
I would really appreciate you input.

I can't for the life of me understand why they didn't put a target rear site on it.
It has a standard revolver rear sight.
Some day that is getting changed.


If it had been sitting next to a nice older model I suppose all things being equal I would have got that instead.

I haven't even handled one of the newer models, but there are so many vintage k22's out there, one should be easy to locate in like new condition if you so desire. And don't pass one up with a little blue wear. I have learned to enjoy the older models with a little wear to the finish ... you don't have to be so particular with them ... shoot them, tak'em fishing, camping, hiking. I don't abuse them, but do use them.

The Model 17s and older K22s are wonderful revolvers and I would prefer an older prelock version. This is one of S&Ws bread and butter revolvers and it has been popular for so many decades for good reason. When you get one and shoot it you'll know why. My favorites are to post war K22s.

I would look for a clean M17 or K22 in the $600 - $700 range before considering a Classic 17 at $700+.

There are so many of the old ones out there, that it's hard to justify buying a new one. My 17-2 is one very sweet revolver, and there are many siblings available. With the high prices on the "Classic" models you can buy a real classic for the same or less. Good luck.

I bought this one a few months ago, a 17-4 in great shape...looks hardly fired. It was less than $700.00. I also have a 4" 17-6 on layaway that is NIB, for about the same price. I pick that up next week. These deals are out there!

I have both a 17-4 and a 617-6 (with lock). They both shoot exceptionally well. I'm in the process of adding a Burris Fastfire III to the 617 using a Allchin mount base. I didn't want the sight to sit so high up as when you use a Weaver rail and rings o hold the tube type "dots". The Allchin gets the sight as low as possible to the frame, not much more than the standard iron sights. Mount is here and Burris should arrive next week.

Driving Tacks (or . . . a little too tacky?)

Hi FM Jones: I bought a new 617 10 shooter this past Jan w/6" barrel. It's one of the sweetest shooting guns ever, and if you need to refurbish some upholstered furniture you can drive the tacks with it. I prefer to shoot at the tacks rather use the piece as a hammer, but either way it's a tack driver.

Thank you for all your advise on the Model 17 and the tack driving. I have decided to look into a good used one as most of you have advised. I believe I will get more for my money. I will let you know when I get it with pictures.

Lots of luck finding a good used one. I have been trying. I drove 160 miles today to visit four area shops, with not a single Smith .22 to be found. I did find a couple of Ruger double action .22's, but little hope of finding a used 617 or 17. None of the dealers were even sure they could order in a new one.

I found a couple on Gunbroker and purchased one the other day.
Now I have to wait till delivery.

I just picked up a like new 18-3 at a local gun show for less than $650.

Just my opinion, but the original M17's (and 4" M18's) are fantastic guns. The 617's (actually an L Frame) is no wheres near as good IMHO. I have a few of them and they are trouble free and tons of fun!

The 617 is definately a K Frame. Perhaps the full lug barrel is throwing you.

I bought a17-3 for $325 or so a year ago at a local pawnshop. I would look for a used one.
