Got a line on a Model 17-4 that appears new. It's also cheaper than some 17-5's that I have seen. What is the difference in the 2. Are the 17-5's better?
Thanks

The -4 is pinned where as the -5 is not. Of course the pinned era guns are more sought, but as far as shooting the -5 should make you grin. I have a -4 4 and I love the thing more than any other S&W--- well maybee not more than my 19-4, or my pre 28, or my..... Hell they all have a special place in my heart.

Clayton, I picked up this 17-6 not to long ago at a local gun show for $350. It shoots really good. With the price of ammo, I can plink with this and not empty my wallet..

"So is the -5 a better shooting gun?"

No. You probably can't tell the difference in accuracy between the too.

Either will shoot very well. S&W fanatics will go for the -4 for sentimental reasons, but the -5 will shoot just as well.

I would choose the pinned barrel model just because it represents an older variation and I am an older variation too.

Not all Md-17-4's were pinned. I had one that was not pinned, sold it and bought a pinned one.

I too prefer the older pinned guns,
I doubt that there will be any accuracy difference between the -s.
As fer as -5s going for more than the -4s, I cant say since each time i see an old 17 or pre 17 I buy them.
But realistically the K22s I have bought have been less than $4 in the past year.
Just get it and you will love it!

Chad I don't have any K-22's now. It is the pinned version of the -4. I bought it. The price on them is only going to go up. And even if it hasn't been shot before...it will get shot now.

Thanks for the info guys.

You wouldn't have gone wrong on either one, but my preference is the -4 (which I have) just because I like older guns. Shoot lots of different kinds of ammo through it, as all 17's can be a little "ammo specific", and find the brand it likes best, (then go out and buy as much of it as you can get).

Thanks H Richard. I think half the fun will be feeding it stuff to find the right ammo.

I didn't mention that one has the target grips, hammer and trigger. Is there anything else that is different about this gun than a regular 17?

Congratulations, I think you'll love it. I've had good luck with Federal bulk pack. Be careful, if you let the Mrs. shoot it, you might have to buy another one.
