Howdy to the board.

I received my first Smith and Wesson from my grandfather in 1958 when I was 9 years old. Needless to say, he started a fire. That first Smith was a "pre" model 34, 22/32 kit gun with "I" frame, serial # 3222x and I still have it.

Have developed a terrible lust for K frames and have many examples of many models, barrel lengths, and calibers. They are all my favorites, but I sometimes end up doing a lot of my plinking with a 1951 "pre" Model 18.

Pictured below is a trio of Combat Masterpiece .22's that I presently own and some details about their oddities. The most questions I have about one is the 18 (no dash) that has the orange insert in the front sight. It would seem to me that this was possibly a premature option for this model?? At any rate, I would welcome tips and comments on anything you see or read here.

TOP: "pre" Model 18, 1951, Smooth combat K frame grips, has old factory Target Hammer and standard trigger that I applied a Tyler Trigger Shoe to.............. This is the gun I qualified for my CCW permit with. It is the most accurate 4 inch barrel gun I have in the stable.

MIDDLE: 18-4, Smooth Target grips, factory Target Trigger and Target Hammer. Oddly, this one came to me with a .22 magnum cylinder!!!! I replaced it with a .22 LR cylinder but it actually shot very accurately with .22 magnum ammo (before I replaced the cylinder)!! In fact, I believe I shot a dime sized group at 20 yards with .22 magnums and using a sandbag.
When I wrote the Smith factory about it, they said "Do not shoot .22 magnum in it." They are covering their butts here. While I know there is a 2/1000ths" difference in the bullets, the magnum round should not cause enough "squeeze factor" to hurt anything. I would not hesitate to shoot magnums in it again.

Bottom: 18 (no dash), with factory Target Grips, Target Hammer, Target Trigger. NOTE FRONT SIGHT !! Oddly, I have never seen a "Orange front sight insert" on a model 18 of this age. I do not know if it was a special option, or someone might have sent it back to Smith for installation. Maybe the company never stamped a dash number on this particular one because there is no room to the right of the number 18 in the yoke. Nonetheless, this is a 99.9% gun that came to me without a box. For reference, the serial # is: K43435x

Thanks, take care, and y'all have a great week. "Bo"

I've never seen an 18 or a pre-18 with a red insert front sight; this is not to say they don't exist. With S&W, you never know. I do love the K-frame .22s, and own these three. The bottom one is an 18-4, made in 1978, serial 34K58XX. As you can see it's factory equipped with a smooth target trigger and a target hammer. The front sight has no insert. The top two guns are Model 17s.

Both of you gents have beautiful trios.
I have only one Model 18-while my preference is for target features, mine has the standard combo.I have it set up with Spegel extended boot grips, and it's very handy.
My one though regarding your magnum Model 18 is that it might be a mismarked Model 48 with a spare LR cylinder....though I guess if the barrel says 22 lr,then it is an 18.

Adding the red insert 'after the fact' was common and pretty easy to do.
Now, having said that, I believe that it could very well have come from the factory in that condition. Somebody could have special ordered it. Happened all the time back then. I have a Pre Model 35 with a brilliant Call gold bead on the Patridge front sight. How many of those have you seen. It was a special order.

Gawjus, jes gawjus! I have two model 18-3s, and the one from 1969 with tt & th is one of my favorite plinkers. I like the combats you have on yours. May have to pick up a set.
And welcome to the asylum! Great first post!

Do any of you Model 18 fans know anything about the "new" Model 18 being sold by S&W? If so, do you know the frame size- L? K? other?

S & W Model 18-3

this will blow your mind. i just ran across a man that had a Smith & Wesson revolver, blue in like new condition but no box, marked 18-3 in the frame and 357 magnum on the 4 inch barrel. it has smooth combat grips also. i am at a loss to explain this as i can find no information that says that S & W ever built one in this caliber. the cylinder is of a slightly richer blue than the rest of the gun. anyone have any ideas about this? saw the gun with my own eyes by the way.

Don,
Are you sure it is marked 18-3, or is it a poorly stamped 19-3? Mis-stamped revolvers are not all that uncommon. There is a 44 magnum on Gunbroker right now that is stamped 28-2 instead of 29-2.

Just recently I was out with my brother shooting our dad's S&W 18-3. It has the regular target grips, TT, TH, and it did have the red insert front sight. I'm not sure if my dad ordered it that way or had it done after but I will tell you that his 29-2, 25-5 and his 19-3, all also have the red front sight insert. Perhaps he had it added to all of them? Not sure.

18-3 357

I THOUGHT OF THAT POSSIBILITY BUT THE 18-3 WAS VERY CLEAR, DID NOT LOOK LIKE A POOR STAMPING BUT COULD BE A MISSTAMP. I,M GOING TO SEE IF I CAN LOOK AT THE GUN AGAIN AND USE A MAGNIFYING GLASS THIS TIME.

Those of us in California probably remember gunsmith Lee Baker who used to set up tables at most major gun shows before he passed away some years back. He would install a colored insert on your gun while you walked around the show for something like $20, he was very professional and I'll bet there are hundreds of his jobs out there on used guns.
