Gentlemen,

I am looking to purchase a NIB 19-2 with 6' barrel. Understand most of the nomeclature on the description, but am not sure of recessed cylinder?

This does have the pinned barrel, and appears to be standard trigger and hammer. Standard front partridge sight with adjustable rear

Are there any particulars on the 19 vs. 19-3, etc. I am unfamiliar with the differences in the models

Thank you,

Curly

The cartridge rim sits down within the cylinder-essentailly flush with the rear of the cylinder. With a non recessed cylinder, the rim sits on top.

Thats why I asked, I did not understand the question.

I would say that I think the dash 4 is the last mod. with a recessed cyl. On the 19. I'm sure one of the pros will be along in a while and give you a more comprehensive answer. If you could clarify it will help them help you.

General opinion

Thank you to all who replied. I have found out what the recessed cylinder is and understand the pinned barrel.

Also am now familiar with the forcing cone debate. 95% .38's should not be an issue I think.

My general question is whether there are any major/minor differences in the different dashes.

It is my understanding the gas seal/collar was changed from -3 to -4. I dont know what that is and are there any other differences?

Thank you,

Curly

I bought a nib 19-3 4" a few months ago. I also bought a gently used 6". I'm shooting .38 Special most of the time. I have an L frame 620 and an N frame 27-2 if I want to get wild with the loads. Also a .357 Ruger BlackHawk.

Very nice guns.

There's a list of the differences here.

Gas ring.

Here's a picture of one on the yoke (-3)

...and one of it on the cylinder (-4)

The gas ring was only on the yoke for a few years so if your 6" 19-3 is an early one (or a very late one), the gas ring may be on the cylinder.

Re-read this thread.

Curly, you're looking at a -2, not a -3, right? and robctwo has the 6" 19-3.:)

Changes

Thank you gentlemen,

The Model 19 I am purchasing is a NIB 19-3. I will have to try the photo link at home as I am unable to get them to open at work to see the gas ring to open.

Thank you also for the links on the model changes. Great reference.

Born on date

The serial number is 2K141**

Is there a reference anywhere that I can find the year the gun was built.

Thanks,

Curly
