Howdy everyone! New poster and brand new Model 19-3 owner here, dipping my feet into the great waters of the world of Smith & Wesson wheel guns.

My Model 19-3 was made in the early '70s, I believe, and boy, do I love it!

Anyway, my question: what grips or grip set-ups (i.e. Tyler-T?) would you all recommend for this gun? Mine is a square butt gun. I suppose a round butt would be best for CC, but I would like to carry this one concealed, so am interested good CC grips.

And don't worry: I'll keep those pretty stock grips around even if I don't use them. :)

I apologize if this question has been asked before (I'm sure it has!) and will certainly accept a mere polite reference to past threads.

The two setups I run on my 19-4 (1980) "square" are the OEM wood + a Tyler T grip and also a set of Craig Spegel Boot grips. Both work great, the Spegels feel better for carry, while the EOM/Tyler feels good at the range and for just feeling "old school". In all reality, neither pair is much larger/smaller than the other and both conceal about the same (for me).

I also use Spegel Boot grits........ but, I hear, he's currently running a 1 year waiting list.

"Boot Grip" style grips are great for concealed carry even with a square butt gun....but what I've found is every hand is different and what feels good to one person doesn't work for another.

Ahern grips are similar to Spegel's ( with a little work). I have one set on a 4" 617.

Check out Grashorn Grips...... stag looks great on a 19 w/ a grip adaptor

You need to find out what feels good to YOU! Otherwise you will also have a box of unused stocks! Bob
This is the first accurate post. Your own hand size is the MOST important thing.

My own hands are probably medium-size hands among men in the US of A, probably smaller than average among shooters, but I don't really know. For ME, probably the best grips for a K-frame square butt are Rogers/Safariland grips usually (always?) found in plastic. Although they extend below the bottom of the frame, they are still concealable, at least for my body shape. They are rather thin and have a palm swell. There are some other grips that are OK, the first being Pachmayr Presentation (Small) grips, also called, I believe, SK-S. Magnas and a Tyler are almost acceptable, and service grips (from an earlier era) and a Tyler are good. Keep in mind, this is for MY hand. If yours is larger, these recommendations may be acceptable or even good, but you will also have a lot more good choices, perhaps starting with Hogue. If you don't like rubber or Nylon, they also have beautiful wooden grips for a reasonable price. If your hand is a lot larger than mine, some of my suggestions may fall away, but many more will open up.

Ideally, you might be able to try out other grips at a range, or maybe at a gun store. The very few bucks you might save buying on line will be more than wiped out by ONE set of grips proving useless.

You have to try them yourself, preferably with heavy-recoil ammo, if you intend to use any.

Good luck!

I deeply appreciate the feedback, folks!

My hands are pretty small - and thin - compared to most American men, and definitely small compared to most shooters. Would be interested in comments from guys with small or medium-small shooting hands. Then we'll see about trying out recommendations at stores or ranges. I'm also not entirely convinced that the stock grips are bad for me, either. Gotta do some more shooting - never a bad thing! Thanks again.

I also have very small, thin finger hands. I'm only 5'5" and about 125 lbs, and my hands are smaller than many female hands. I find that the stock magna grips work best on most of my J and K frames. I put some Ahrends on my 586 and they feel perfect for me. On my 19-3 are smooth target grips, but those feel too bulky, so I might switch them out for Ahrends.

I've considered Altamont grips for my EDC model 36, but I've read complaints about the placement of the finger grooves on their boot grip for small hands, and I think the others will add too much length for concealment on my little body. I might try a pair of the Altai grips one of these days.
