Hello all, just joined this forum a few minutes ago. Found this site while researching on model 19's. My local shop that I go to has an immaculate model 19-5 with 6" barrel. I held it and instantly knew that I had to have it. Put a deposit on it the next day. I am paying $650 for it, does that seem fair? Its in excellent condition, also I live in commifornia, so probably cost more than other states. Not sure what year it was manufactured. Was a 19-5 from early 80's? I wish it was older with counterbored cylinder, but oh well. I have read recently about flash burns and cone erosion? I looked it over very well, nothing stood out to me other than a small scratch in the bluing at the muzzle, maybe from holstering. Its a sexy gun, cant wait to bring it home. Now just need to get me a Model 29.

Open the cylinder and look at the underside of the top strap. There shouldn't be signs of bad burning there.

Congrats and please post pics.

those prices are a little high compared to my area, but for california they sound very fair. the 66 is a great revolver and is strong enough for .357 loads

Welcome from Pa. Its not an unfair price in today's market, its close to what I paid for a 2.5 inch 19-5 with a hard chrome metaloy finish missing trigger stop, bob hammer, beat up pachmayr grips and a few pry marks on the side plate. Are you feeling better now? Yes I replaced the hammer, trigger stop and little screw and gave it new wood grips, now we can go out in public together.

I appreciate the feedback. But, the answer to my ultimate question is......... Did I post in the correct thread? Once I bring this sexy revolver home ill search the SN. But unfortunately, I think the 19-5 is not a groovy 70's piece is it? I still love it. The wood grips are immaculate, checkering still sharp.

Heres my story lol. Since I was 18, I have spent my money on firearms. Grew up some and got married............. Sold all my guns except for my 1911 I bought as soon as I turned 21, and my Remington 700 I had chambered for 7mm STW. That STW is brutal man. Needless to say after the divorce, I sold the rifle to put dark thoughts out of my head, kept the 1911, my baby. The 1911 got stolen from my house during a robery while I was at work, worked 1.5hrs away. I know, I know it should have been locked up, it was my nightstand gun. Pisses me off more that it was loaded with a pachmyr stainless mag full of black talons! I wish my ex no harm at all, thats my daughters mother after all. But, I have finally started to buy more guns for myself again, while I can. Mostly affordable milsurps, mosins, turk mausers. Two very under rated rifles btw. I make good money as a diesel mechanic. Enough to pay $1000 month child support, medical, and my mortgage. So this model 19 is a big purchase for me. I cant afford to leave for vacations, so I cash it out every year. I earned it, and that is whats paying for this work of art. No regret.

My Model 19-5, AEF prefix, was made in 1984 as far as I can gather. The serial number range as listed in the Standard Catalog puts it somewhere in the early 1980s, and the grips, which I assume are original to the gun, are marked JUN 18, 1984. I was lucky enough to snag a red ramped front sight model, which seem more rare than the guns with the partridge front sights, on top of being better looking IMHO.

Here's a picture:

I'm not sure how long it'll still be mine though, as I'm in need of another carry gun and it's the gun I shoot the least due to ammo cost. It is a really nice S&W with that Model 29-esque profile in a more tame but still mighty caliber though. I think at $650, you got a nice gun with a great lineage at a fair price. Enjoy it!

The one I'm getting looks just like that. Still locked up in the shop though. Put $500 towards it and fifty rounds through it today, cleaned it up and had to have it locked back up. Amazing is all I can say about it. Shot some nice heavy grain rounds through. Read that the lighter 125gr mag loads are bad for them. Can't wait to bring it home.
