After 2-1/2 months it is back! I purchased this gun from a local pawn shop one morning back in November, shot it 18 times, called S&W, and handed it to a FedEx driver at 2pm that same day. The blueing was more of a brown with a couple small pits on the right side of the frame. One of the extractor pins was broken but even so the cylinder was fairly tight. Hardly any erosion on the top strap but definite evidence of being shot based on the worn medallions.

All I can say is Wow, it is now a new gun! Smith turned a new thread on the barrel and recut the forcing cone, installed new extractor pins, and gave it the Standard Polish and Blue for a total of $310.

Customer Service at Smith says it was built in '57, possibly '56.

I just sent about 50 rounds of 38's through it, I could shoot it all day!
There is some weird glare on the first pic above the trigger. Fluorescent lights I guess.

Very Nice! Thanks for posting this, I have been curious to see what a current reblue looks like from Smith.

That looks great. I wish they were capable of doing that type of work back when I sent in a couple in to them years ago.

Very nice,

Do they still put refinish marks or the date in grip frame ?

Could you post a picture if there is any such marks

Love the older Combat Magnums !

My guess is K-317039 probably shipped in early 1958 , The K-317000's are found both model marked as well as non Model marked,
In comparison I have one at Serial K317946 shipped May,1958 that is "Non Model marked" .
Diamond targets would have come on your gun , the non diamond targets on it are from after 1968 .

WELL, I THINK THAT CLEARS UP THE QUESTION OF THE QUALITY OF THE BLUE JOBS COMING OUT OF S&W AS OF LATE--OR AT LEAST WHAT THEY ARE CAPABLE OF. THAT GUN IS BEAUTIFUL ! ! ! ENJOY IT…...

"Customer Service at Smith says it was built in '57, possibly '56."

K288,989 – K317,822...1957 (manufacture)

From that, I'd expect yours shipped sometime in 1958.

Nice,
I wish they would work on older guns. Last time I checked with S&W they would not work on guns that don't have model #'s (pre-models).

I sent my 586 in for a reblue 2 years ago and they didn't mark them then.
I don't know when they stopped that practice.

Very nice refinish job. You are lucky.
Getting it done is a roll of the dice depending on who polishes it. The bluing part is easy, it's the over polishing that ruins a gun.

Great job, looks really nice.
Some may complain about it taking 2 1/2 months , but in my book it was worth the wait. Have you waxed it yet? A good wax job makes them look even better.
Nice going.....gary

I've long believed that the Model 19 is the prettiest revolver that Smith ever made, followed by the very similar looking Model 15.

How did the side plate fit turn out.I have a beater I may send in.

I've got no complaints with the fit of the side plate. They must have oiled the gun real well and it keeps seeping out around the plate and some of the screws which makes it look like the finish is not perfect but it is.

And no I haven't waxed it but I'm going to. From what I read around here it sounds like Ren Wax is what I need to buy. And then a decent camera so I can take more pics!
