Model 19 no dash

I'm looking at a Model 19, serial number K408XXX, 4-screw, 4-inch with model number that is simply "19" (no dash) (see pic). Model 19 no-dash guns should have been made in 1957 or so, and would have a much lower serial number. A gun with this serial number should be either a 19-1 or a 19-2.

Could this be a forgery of some sort?

Welcome! I have seen a MOD 19 with an SN in the K 391000 range that shipped in 1960. I suspect yours likely shipped in 1961.

Even though it is "supposed" to be a 19-1 by this time, S & W is famous for not shipping in numeric order, and book references are often very rough estimates of production, not ship, dates. Popular models should ship soon after being produced but there is a lot of variability in this also. Enjoy!

That should be a righteous gun. There are others with higher numbers. I know K408869 exists.

I own two 4 screw 19 no dash revolvers: K3443xx and K4213xx pictured below. Yours is in between so maybe average.

I doubt there's anything wrong with that gun.
I have a non-model marked Combat Magnum in the K381xxx range, which is well above the serial number range for model marked guns.

The dash 1 change was to reverse the threads on the extractor rod. But S&W used up all parts to the extent possible. So it would not be surprising to find a "no-dash" gun assembled after dash 1 production began. If the rod had right hand threads, it would not normally be marked as a dash 1.
