I was at the LGS today and found this 19-4. Doesn't look like its ever been fired, gun looks perfect. don't know if the grip is original or not, but it does have the target trigger and hammer. The front sight has the red ramp, don't know if that's original. The engraving I don't know about at all but there are initials engraved. The serial number 52K5059 puts it I think late 1978 or early 1979. I don't know if I did good or not but I'm someone will tell me, gave 650 for it..

The grips are not factory stock. Factory would have been the large target or smaller magna style. The engraving is interesting but may well reduce resale value.
You do have one of the best all around revolvers produced by Smith and Wesson. Enjoy having a classic firearm.

Will make a fun shooter,
The rubber Hogue grips are much newer,
I'm not seeing a red ramp insert, might be red painted ramp.
Enjoy your new toy !

The engraving reminds me of the various and many tattoos that some folks get. (Hither and Nither)

My aesthetic tastes are biased ... (your mileage may vary)

The Mod.19 is still in the top 2 of my all time favorite wheelguns .
Congrats on your new gun. The doodling on it isn't that bad.

Yes, most definitely aftermarket etching. Red ramp is painted ( I would have done the same thing on a shooter.) The target hammer and trigger are a definite plus, and begs for a set of target stocks. Lose the Goodyears before rust sets in underneath them. All in all, a most excellent shooter at the price.

As the story goes, the Model 19 was Bill Jordan's brain child.
Therefore, in my opinion, Herrett's Jordan Trooper stocks would be
the correct stocks for your Model 19. Send them an outline of your
shooting hand and they can make the stocks for an exact fit. Here
is my 19-4 with Jordan Troopers. I sent it back to S&W about twenty
years ago for a tune up, and I also had the McGivern gold bead front
sight installed. The correct holster is also the Jordan Border
Patrol by Don Hume, 2nd from left.
Hope you enjoy your 19-4 as much as I have mine.

A few observations (and responses to the responses you have had above):

1. A Model 19 is always a nice gun. Congrats on running that one down.:)

2. Although that Model 19 most likely did not come from the Factory as an "engraved gun", I believe that the gun was shipped back to the Factory where "Laser Engraving" was done sometime in the mid to late 1980s. Here's a Factory Information Sheet on what they were doing at the Factory:

3. The Factory did produce laser engraved guns, mostly 586's and 686's (from my un-scientific observations and as noted on the back side of the above brochure). I have a 586 so "engraved" in my collection, but I don't have any photos of it, but here are some photos of a 586 like mine from a closed GunsInternational sale:

4. From the two photos that you shared, the gun looks to to me to have been reblued at some point, as the roll marks are not very crisp and a bit rounded on the edges. Also, somewhere in its history, the majority of the color case on the hammer and trigger were lost.

5. The grips are not original to the gun. As noted above, it would have shipped with wood checkered target grips.

With all of that said, I really like your 19-4 and I think it will bring you years and years of enjoyment.:):)

Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us!

I would like to just thank you all for answers and opinions. It's always a big help

If those Hogue grips fit your hands well, why not keep them on for shooting comfort? A regular coating of RIG or similar will prevent any rusting under the rubber.
