Hello from IL. New to this site , big Smith fan have a few, picked up a model 1905 4th with 2inch BBL, round butt, awhile back. I received a letter from Smith stating it left the factory January 12,1934 as a 2inch. I can not find much info on these, I know 2'' are rare gun is maybe around 90 percent, was wondering value of it.

Was there any mention in the letter of this being a special order? At least one standard S&W reference places the first issue of 2" barrel, .38 Special K Frames (M&Ps) during 1938. Have you checked for the re-work star on the butt, service date codes under the left stock? Roy's letter notwithstanding, it wouldn't be the first error identifying the original as-shipped configuration of a gun that has been made.

Thanks for the replies, the letter does not state anything about being special order, no I can not find any star on butt, I took the grips off and did not find any other markings, except matching serial number. Will get pictures up as soon as I can....thanks

Welcome to the forum. Helluva way to introduce yourself too :D.

I would love to hear more about your M&P. I study the 2 inch pre war M&Ps and to date, 1934 is the earliest year these shipped with yours being the earliest that year. I'd like to add yours to my data if you wouldn't mind supplying the information from the letter. You can PM me to keep it confidential if you'd like. I just compile the data about the gun, not who owns them.

Thanks...a few of mine...
