Model 25-2 Competition tuned vs factory parts

I have a Model 25-2 (1972) that Lettered as shipping Feb 14, 1972 to Service Armament in New Jersey. The gun shipped as a 3T w football relief target stocks.

This gun has been the subject of several posts after I sold it as "original" and the buyer felt it had been modified which I did agree with and refunded the money, gun returned to me.

Several things were found: Very light SA pull of 2-3/4#, DA pull also light at 6-1/2#. The action has always been this way, very, very smooth and 100% reliable (no mis-fires, no light primer strikes), using Blazer Brass 230 gr FMJ and full moon clips most of the time. I only plink and punch paper and do not formally compete.

After several posters comments I decided to get a factory new mainspring, strain screw, rebound slide, and rebound slide spring. I installed the factory parts and what a major difference in the performance....stiff as all get out. Still quite accurate at the 50 ft range, but now wider spread especially in double action.

Some physical notations: mainspring had been ground or sanded, strain screw shortened by filing to 0.5665" lg., rebound slide, hand, upper portion of trigger polished to mirror finish, and rebound slide spring shortened to 15 coils (1.0075" lg relaxed).

I installed a factory new mainspring, new strain screw (0.5885" lg), new unpolished rebound slide, new 18 coil (1.225" lg relaxed) rebound slide spring, factory hammer block and tightened all up.

NOW....the SA trigger pull = 3#-9 ozs., and DA pull is 11#-5 ozs

I don't know what the "out-of-the-box" factory new pull weights are for vintage Model 25-2 but much too high for me and not the fun of the older parts. The new parts may possibly "wear in" somewhat but it will be on the next caretakers watch. I'm putting the competition modified parts back in so I can enjoy some more shooting before offering it up for sale again.

Dimensional measurements made with my Mitutoyo Digital Calipers, and trigger pulls made with my Lyman Digital Trigger Pull that automatically averages 10 successive pulls.

Having paid for action jobs in my competition days, I value them. As long as they are reliable I also prefer them for field use.

I only ever shoot DA, so SA pull weight is immaterial to me. Whatever it takes to minimize sight movement during the trigger squeeze is going to result in more shots in the 'X' ring. That is the intent of an action job.

I can't picture anyone preferring a factory stock action over an action job performed by a skilled gunsmith. I do favor whatever will make that revolver group more tightly for me.

The factory DA trigger pulls are usually in the 12 - 14 range. A while back, a friend bought a brand new "Performance Center" gun with a 16# DA trigger pull. SA trigger pulls are usually in the 3-1/2 to 5 pound range.

I suspect the very heavy DA triggers on new revolvers encourage a lot of people to buy a semi-auto instead, at the gun store. Any gun can have a nice SA trigger pull. S&W K,L and N frame guns can have the best DA of all the revolvers out there, including Colt Python and all the high dollar European brands. Sadly, not that many guns or owners ever see their potential.
