Model 25-2 of 1950 with Red Ramp

Good Morning All

I purchased online a 6.5 inch Model 25-2 with the 1950 stamping on the barrel. Serial Number is N3387XX which puts it in the correct range of the mis stamped barrels. I have not recieved the revolver yet, however from the pictures it appears to have a factory red ramp front sight along with a white outline rear sight. Have any of you seen a 25-2 with a red ramp front sight? I am hoping this is factory installed option.

It very well could be a factory installed option. S&W offered it, I'm sure, at the time, and lots of folks sent their's in for the change.

Unless it was a special order 25-2 it is unlikely the RR/WO are factory installed, and especially one with the 1950 mismark barrel.. As has been mentioned it could have been returned to S&W for the modification.

If the original cardboard shipping box with a label indicating special sights is not available with the gun the only way you will know for sure if the sights are "factory" is by requesting a factory letter...

I have never seen a 25-2 with a ramp nor have I ever heard of one. Certainly anything could be original on special order but I suspect it is an aftermarket modification. If it looked absolutely dead-on factory original to me with no hint of being reworked I would invest the $50 for the letter to confirm.

If the original box is with it this feature should be indicated on it.

The box does not come with the gun. When it arrives I will look it over and try and post pictures. I've sent several revolvers back to S & W, all shooters, to have the RR/WO installed. For me this is the best sight combination.

Please keep the comments coming! And if anyone does have a 25-2 with a RR please post the picture.

i have seen two guns like you described. owned one of them. one was marked on the box rr/wo. the other gun had been returned to smith for rework as per the sights. one gun was in the n350000 range and the other was n425000 range.

Interesting..... Very, very unusual guns!

A few questions if you wouldn't mind.... Were these guns both the mis-marked "1950" versions of the 25-2 "1955"? Were either of them ever factory lettered? Were you the original owner of either of them? Would there possibly be pictures available of the shipping box or the gun sights of the factory RR/WO gun?

I recieved the gun and the front sight looks good. The pin is polished smooth with the frame and the red ramp size and color looks consistent with my M29's and M57's. The only difference I can tell is the ramp blade up to where the red ramp begins is smooth while the ramps on my M29's and M57's are serrated. Pictures attached. Please let me know what you think. It is also possible that a skilled gunsmith modified the original patridge blade into a red ramp blade. I have a model 27 6-inch that was modified for me in just such a fashion by an authorized S&W Warranty/Service Center back in the 80's. In such a case, the pin holding the blade into the ramp goes untouched and unmolested. While I have no opinion as to whether or not this was done to your gun, it is a possibility that you have to consider until you get a factory letter.

I ran across a super clean 38-44 outdoorsman the other day that had a front sight with red on it, but it was closer in shape to the patridge. It was slightly rounded at the rear with red. I'm hoping it's legit and not dremel and paint.
