Model 26????????

I got a phone call last night from a patrol officer saying we got a hit on a stolen firearm from an New Jersey Police Department. the gun was stolen from our jurisdiction in 1980!!!!!!!

they tried to pull the case from microfilm and could not confirm the serial number due to being one letter off. we have to run validations constantly on stolen firearms and we find many mistakes from years ago.

I asked if the department could hold the weapon till I could have someone research the case to confirm.

I got an email this morning with the gun specifics.

the gun is question is a SW Model 26 22LR........huh??????????

correct me if I am wrong....and I dont have my SW bible handy,

To my knowledge, a SW Model 26 is a LWT barrel (sorry for my semi auto abbreviations) 45acp or the thinner barrel brother to the Model 25?

did it ever come in 22 LR?

when a stolen check was run on the gun....it referenced a gun stolen here from 1980...which the report indicates to be a Model 18 22LR.

the serial numbers are nearly identical with the Model 26 having one extra letter added to it.

there was no other information...urghhh! I would have asked....is this a semi auto or revolver? but our dept is young and revolvers are ancient to them.

Here is my guess without doing any research....
I bet they have a Model 46 22 LR in their possession and misread the model number.

My big question before I call this NJ detective back later today.....did a model 26 ever come is 22 LR configuration?

The Model 26 was never made in .22 Long Rifle. Also, there is only one known 1950 Target 45 that is actually stamped MOD-26 in the yoke cut. All of the others do not have a model number stamped there.

I am sure the revolver is not a 1950 Target 45.

i my 33 years of law enforcement, 20 years i was an investigator, and have run into guns that were listed as stolen and have discovered that many guns can have the same ser. number just different models even s&w have this. and true back in the early days of entering stolen items on ncic and gcic there were many mistakes made.

When I was a detective....I hated checking validations on stolen gun entries into ncic.

As a supervisor now....I hate assigning them to an already overloaded detective.

I recall a lot of model 29s listed as stolen in the 70s and 80s.

An of course, gun research...this gets directed to me. Oh well...someone has to do it.

Did they specify it was a revolver? Possibly a mod 46 .22 semi auto target model? That's the only other .22 I cold think of that might fit.

Well I called the detective and it aint a SW. dont know how that came to be but communication is the first to break down.

it was a german made revolver....and I did not get details as I told him that was not the gun listed in the report.
