I just picked up this beauty S&W Model 27-2 P&R 6 inch.
Shows a little wear. The price was $50.
Yes I said $50.
The only problem is the dork who had it before me was a little careless and damaged the barrel. The barrel has two bulges in it. I cannot imagine how he managed to put two bulges in the barrel. I guess you clear a squib with another round?!?!?! If you look closely at the photo of the shot down the muzzle you can see the bulges. :-( Anybody out there have a ballpark figure what S&W would charge to change out the barrel and re-blue this beauty.
I am going to call them tomorrow but figured this is a topic that some of you guys could sink your teeth into.

The re blue is not the problem..( about $300.00 I think) I don't believe S&W HAS the barrel.. to change out.. You might try Jack's First parts, Numirich or Brownells.. or Gun Broker

If you find a barrel.. THEN call Smith and ask what the charge would be with you supplying the barrel..

Good luck..

The first issue will be finding a barrel. Since Model 27s are in the Classic Line now, I wonder if one of those barrels will fit. If so, you will probably have to go with 4 or 6.5 inch as those are the two barrels available in the Classic Line. Naturally, if you can find a period barrel in good shape, S&W can install that.

You will want to have a complete reblue done as the blue on the barrel and the frame will not match.

I have no idea as to cost, but it will be worth it and you will have a great shooter.

Be sure you have them go over the action while it is there and change out any bad or modified parts.

I think I would make it a four inch. :)

A 4 inch would be nice. I am going to start calling in the morning.
No hurry. $50 in the gun, I can wait.

You guys rock. I guess if I cannot find the correct barrel I will pick up a 28 barrel.

Thanks

Just my personal preference, but if you can find a 5" barrel I would sure go with that!! Probably impossible though :-(

S&W said they would install a barrel but would not re-pin it.
Only crush fit it.
Rats!! Now I have to find someone who will install & re-pin a barrel for me.

Nice Score!

Hard to tell from the photos, but if the damage occurred in front of the ejector shroud it seem like shortening would be the way to go.

Let 'em put on another barrel. Take it to a good 'smith, and he can probably install a pin, after you zero the sights. A pin would cost chump change, and the hole in the frame is already there. Numrich has the barrel pin for $2.35/ea.

Sounds like a plan.
I located a 4" model 28 barrel and it will be in my hands in a few days.
Not original but it is new and will fit. I guess off to S&W to have them install it. I'll post some photos when I get it all done.

I would have liked to have an original barrel but I guess it will be a great shooter.

6404---Dont cheapen a fine gun with a 28 barrel. l found 4 Mod 27 barrels in less than 3 minutes on one gun net auction site alone. 6'' nickel,,,5''blue,, 3 1/2'' blue,, 6'' blue. All p&r barrels too
