Saw a 3.5" 27-2 today. Asking price was $900, but the hammer was flash chromed , and the DA trigger was about 16 pounds and gritty as heck :(. How could someone do a bubba job on such a fine revolver? I almost wept.

My guess would be that someone changed out parts and did not or could not fit them properly. The gun can probably be cleaned up fairly easily.

I would have still bought the gun, but I would have definitely haggled on this one. The whole idea of guns like these, for me, is collect them if you can, shoot them if you must, preserve them if you will. They are the pinnacle of Smith craftsmanship to me, and would be the crown jewel of my entire collection, not just the Smiths.

There are a lot of Bubba's who think they can make things better and they usually make things decidedly worst. But I would view that as a opportunity to get the item for a better price by pointing out what is wrong with it and than getting it fixed right by my gunsmith and restoring it to it's past glory.

You call that blasphemy? This is blasphemy.

It sounds like the one you looked at could be made right for a $100 or so. This one is not coming back at any price.

I agree with the others. If I were you I would go back and see if they'll come down on the price some. If the hammer is the only problem it wouldn't take much to return the gun to its former glory.

Now to find the other half? Must be real easy to unload. Darn I like those hinged revolvers.

Need a prick punch and a hammer? Vise to hold it?

JSW, what happened? That is a truly abominable picture.

I picked this up on ebay a while back. I asked the seller about the history of it but he wouldn't really tell me much. The guy sells a lot of gun parts, he was probably afraid I was trying to find out where he gets them. All he would say was that he got it from a government agency. The gun might have been used in a crime or maybe was the victim of one of those gun buyback programs. All I know is that this early pre 27, even refinished, was likely worth at least $400-500 in today's market. A complete waste and probably paid for with our tax dollars too.

Maybe 10 years back I picked up a 95% , 6" blued 29-3 for $225. The owner had Bubba'd the H&T by trying to "Tune it up".

My Armorer picked through what I had for N frame hammers and triggers and fitted up a H&T in short order. STILL shooting that bargain 29-3.

Just because the hammer follows through or it's gritty...they can usually be fixed.

I'll bet that gun fragment used to be a "gun buy-back" program victim or was destroyed because it was used in a murder. We send in guns to be destroyed all the time that end up like this one.

Recently, a nickel plated M36 no dash came in from a case where the owner committed suicide. I helped the case officer decipher the numbers on the gun for model and serial number and nearly wept when he told me why he had it, because I knew where it was going...
