I just acquired a 27-2 with serial number in the range of N612XXX. It is a 5" version.

1) I was curious what the approximate DOB would be?

2) Did S&W even make a target stock with optional finger grooves?
The stocks look to be target stocks with finger grooves. The stocks have all the features of targets with the addition of 3 finger grooves. The workmanship looks good enough to be factory, yet out of place on the stocks.

3) What version of the target stocks would be correct for this gun (speed loader relief or full cutout on one side or both)?
I would like to find a set that matches the gun properly.

Thanks in advance for any info,
Woody

1) I have a 5 inch Nickel with serial #N609XXX that was shipped January 1979 (R Jinks). Really close to yours.

2) I don't believe finger groove Targets were ever shipped with a 27-2

3) My 5 inch Nickel shipped with Football Targets (w/pres. case) My 5 inch Blued, came with Magnas and 2 piece Blue box only. (N169XXX May 1974)

I hope that this helps. :) Others will be along soon to correct my mistakes! ;)

GOT PICS? :D Welcome to the Forum!

Your revolver was shipped in 1979.
In the "P&R" era, I don't believe S&W shipped any finger-grooved target stocks.
Yours would have been shipped with the speed loader cutout.

Bob & Dennis,
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
I need to figure out how to post pics one of these days.

Now I need to find a correct set of grips and the world will be perfect again - I have a little OCD problem :)

They actually look correct except for the custom done finger grooves... Got to love the Bluing done back in the day!!

That's a beauty and the grips look pretty good, not factory, but you have to love American ingenuity. I could have seem my Dad doing that.

I love the gun - I have been thinking about having my dad "undo" the changes to the grips (he's a pretty good wood worker)- just wanted to make sure they were not some special order thing I had never heard of. I was thinking of putting back a darker wood where the grooves are now ... maybe ... maybe not :)

Just find the proper grip for the gun and shoot it with those nice finger groove grips. Have the the best of both worlds. My guns with nice grips usually go to the range or hunting with Goodyears.

The grips are not factory or S&W Combat grips and those never came on a 27-2. The 5 inch 27-2 is the best balanced of the 27-2's in my opinion and a big favorite with 27-2 shootrers.

Hey, that is really a nice looking 27! I don't have one, but have a 28 no dash, 6". 1960 gun. I have picked up grips on ebay, with mostly good results F.W.I.W. Enjoy it! I know that I would. Bob

They did a decent job (in my humble opinion) on the cutouts of the grip. Not that I would have the heart to do it to my 27.

Guys,
thanks for the responses - the cutouts are done well - I just can't let it go, I will either find a set to replace them and then sell these or I will end up spending many hours trying to figure out how to put them back to what they use to look like before they got modified (obsessive personality trait issues - at least I know I've got em - I only check the doors are make sure they are locked 10 times before I go to bed every night ... so you can imagine how non-correct guns and dirty guns get to me). :)
