Model 27 No Dash Mystery - Experts Please Weigh In

Did you get a letter on it? If you PM me the serial number, I'll try to dig up more info for you.

I have a letter. It was sold to the Arthur Cook Supply Corporation in Laurel, Maryland and shipped on May 1, 1961 to the Arthur Cook Supply Corporation c/o Waukegan Shoot-O-Rama in Waukegan, Illinois.

I don't know if the gun actually belonged to Arther Cook but here's some information about him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Cook_(sport_shooter)

Thanks - it is a real mystery! I have 2 5" pre-27's and a 3.5" 27-1 (from 1962) , but I have not seen a lot of no dash 27's with 5" barrels. If it shoots well, it's,, a beautiful gun. It does not appear to me to be refinished but the surface can be dulled if someone uses any acetic cleaners.

The cylinder in the gun is a CNC cylinder era so from sometime later than around 1994.
Already pointed out that the frame lug would be replaced for a non counterbored cylinder.
Put another vote in for leave it alone and enjoy shooting it.

Here's the factory letter. It's only a guess but, since Mr. Cook was a supporter of the shooting sports and didn't have a personal presence in Illinois, it's possible that he may have had the gun sent to Shoot-O-Rama to be used as a prize for one of the competitions that they ran.

The mystery deepens. Who would make these unusual modifications and for what purpose? It is, without a doubt, an interesting custom model 27.

Rust on the cylinder? Bulged chamber? Dropped and dinged? Hard to tell.

It's already in the S & W database kept by the members here. So I wonder if there is another thread on this M27? i tried the serial number search here but couldn't find it. Hard to believe it was just a repair.

How do I access the database? It's not listed in the database on the private SWCA forum.

So, given all of the foregoing information, what would be a realistic value for this revolver?
I'm using my phone, so I'm quickly losing track of who's talking to whom here, but…Sorry Thiokol my friend. It's a treasure I just can't part with.

For Gun Relic:

Thanks so much for providing the database/sheet though. I will have to move that request for a letter from S&W up my to do list for sure. As I think I said earlier in this string, I still can't believe it survived the stupidity of my youth unscathed.

On another note, according to the database so far, I could have as low as #10 on the Mod 27/5" combo. Of course there are still missing S/Ns so I'll have to hang in there until they are accounted for.

Again, much thanks,

R

I also believe the gun has been refinished and they did their work with the side plate off. It has beveled edges around the seam and is not tight as it should be. With the modernization of the cylinder, I think it hurts the value tremendously.
I think its current value is what you paid for it.
If you like it, shoot it and enjoy it. If you don't really like it, sell it for what you can and let someone else enjoy it as a Shooter.
