How do these two compare value-wise, assuming all else is equal? Is one worth more than the other? What about trades? Would you trade a 27-2 for a 29-2 or vice-versa?

The 3.5" model 27-2 and the 6.5" blue model 29-2 (think "Dirty Harry") are bringing the most currently, followed by the 5" 27. Aside from these, in the common barrel lengths, the 27s tend to sell for less.

If I wanted to shoot it a lot I would (and have) traded 29's for 27's.

To me the 29 was simply a 27 with larger chambers. The lockwork etc. was too much the same despite the larger round and what it produced as far as battering the system. To me, it would never hold up shot for shot like a 27 would. Others may say different, but I won't even argue with them. (And I am not talking hot rodding the gun.)

IMO, it is a shame that Ruger had to use the old Triple Lock system that Smith never thought to use when they went from 27 to 29.

Resale may be depend upon the Harry Callahan acolytes :)

I have had several 29's and a couple of 27's. I can tell you that the 27 is the nicest carrying revolver even though it is a big gun. I love my 3 1/2 inch and miss my 5-inch 27. Perhaps a better comparison would be the Model 57 .41 Magnum. Not as much recoil as the .44 and a little better overall I think.

In Market terms the model 27 should command the higher price. According to the Law of Supply and Demand, the model 27 should command a premium because it's so sought after. However, the model 29 is considered a "pinnacle revolver" and some dealers just don't seem to be willing to reduce the price to the point where it will actually sell. That said, I suspect that if you were to study completed auctions on a site like Gunbroker you would probably find that the model 27 sells at a consistently higher price than the model 29. I also expect that you'll find the 3 1/2 inch model 27 is the most desired S&W revolver ever produced and commands a price worthy of that status.

I have one 27 and two 29-2's (One Nickel, One Blue). No comparison for me, I love shooting the 44's. I reload so the cost of ammo is not a big issue.

I think in the long run, the Model 27-2 and earlier will be the most expensive. They are the Cadillac of the line, witness the checkered rib and top strap to set them off.\

I say this as a dyed in the wool M57 guy. Bring me all those crummy, outdated, useless .41 Magnums...
