Greetings to everyone.

I am considering buying a Model 28-2 with 4-inch barrel, and it has a red ramped front sight. I am no expert on the 28, so I ask: was this feature common on 4-inchers? I have read in the SCSW about the NYPD variation, and since this gun is also PD-marked, I was wondering if the red ramp on this gun is also a valuable variation, or not. Sorry no info on S/N.

I attach a couple of pictures (BTW the gun carries an attractive price tag, even considering it lacks its original stocks).

Thanks!

Seems like I've read that most HPs came with a plain front sight. I guess they could have been ordered with the red ramp or I'm sure a lot of gunsmiths could do one. There's even kits for doing it yourself. Don't think it would help with value.
Also, the one in your picture does not look factory to me, might be the pic?

RR ih the pic does not look factory(too long). Doesn't add any value.......May even detract for a purist.......That being said my 4" 28 has RR/WO, target hammer, Ranger trigger and smooth target grips......Rare?......No I did it myself long ago.

The front sight is the correct length, the red ramp looks like paint, not the normal plastic insert. The agency marked model in the SCSW is NYSP, not the NYPD. The model 28 has a huge following and certain people collect PD marked models. It is worth what you want to pay for it.
Good luck on a nice gun - Joe

You're a man who knows what he likes. I too had a red insert installed by S&W on my 4 incher, and I added a target hammer, smooth combat trigger, and a W/O rear sight blade. For looks I put a set of Grashorn elk antler stocks on it, but for shooting I use Herrett's Jordan Trooper stocks. I carry it in a Lobo pancake holster.

Thanks to all for your answers, which got my attention to details I had not noticed at first glance (I only saw photos for now).

I'll keep your opinion in mind when I check the gun.

cheers.
