Guys, I am looking at a Model 28-2 that has target grips on it and the owner claims they are original. I thought all model 28's came with the small grip. Am I right or wrong? Thanks, wallacem in Ga

When I was a dealer back in the 60s,70s and 80s and sold S&Ws , I all ways had new factory target grips in the case for Mod 28s. Or I could order them from the distributor. Had a crab basket of grips under the bench.

Rule no # 1 with S&W is Nothing is absolute with S&W.
While Model 28-2s came standard with Magnas I would bet some shipped with targets if ordered that way.
On a side note the factory serial stamped the inside panel of the smaller Magnas but except for a few early examples mostly did not serial the larger target grips as those did not need to be fit to the frame since they covered most of it.

When I ordered my 4" 28-2 from my local gunshop it was ordered with target grips. They turned out to be a bit big for me so I replaced them with Pachma Presentation grips. I was in private security and the Pachmayers worked perfectly during damp weather

thanks guys, I have learned something new. Is there anyway to know if certain grips are factory original on a gun by looking at the gun or box? I assume a letter would confirm it. Wallace
I have seen at least one 28-2 4", and it was an S prefix, with it's original box. It was wearing Goodyears, but the target grips were in the box. The portion of the label for stocks had the letter T in it and the stocks were not numbered. So they did indeed ship from the factory that way.
In the 1960-1970 era Model 28s came with both magna and target grips from the factory
I couldn't afford them, but I remember seeing Model 28's in the case with target grips on them back in the day.
