Just picked up a real nice 28-2, 4" at a local gun show. This piece is in excellent condition. However, it was drilled and tapped and had a scope mounted.
Question 1, does anyone know where I can acquire a complete rear sight assembly? I would like to return this fine piece back to carry mode.

Question 2, in several older catalogs under the Model 28 Highway Patrolman listing there is the following;
Stocks: Checkered walnut, Magna. Grooved tangs and trigger. Would someone please clarify for me, what are Grooved Tangs?

I will post pictures tomorrow.
Thanks, Karl...

Grooved tangs are the front and back parts of the grip frame which have the grooves cut into them for helping to hold the hand to the grip. The trigger is similarly cut with grooves to help hold the finger on the trigger.

Parts for old style revolvers can be found at parts houses like Numerich or Brownells. Sometimes old-fashioned gun stores have parts. Your 28 will have a slightly different rear sight in that it will not be grooved but plain and with a squared off front where the barrel screws into the frame. I do think that if you find one with the grooves cut into it, it will fit into the slot for the rear sight.

I was able to take ownership for a little over 525 out the door. As far as the sight I have checked everywhere and no one has one. I would like to replace with the factory smooth top and squared off version though.
Also, thanks for the clarification on the use of the word tangs in the gun books. I kinda figured it was referring to the back/front strap etc. but everywhere I've seen the reference, its adjacent to the Stocks heading. Makes sense now.

Dillon offers a fixed sight rear sight for modern S&W revolvers if that would be of interest. It costs $75 + shipping ...

D&L Sports S&W Sight
The D&L fixed rear sight fits all modern S&W revolvers with three factory-threaded screw holes in the top strap. The front sight has to be filed to achieve an exact zero.
L85-00558 $75.00

Good looking 28, I have had mine since 1980 and used it a few years in competition within our department. Still have it and still shoot it. BTW, check out gunbroker.com its a great place to find parts. I do not recommend E-Bay because of Pay-Pal and their anti second amendment stance.
